Shitty internet

Okay, this is partially fueled by abecx's similiar thread.

I am getting very VERY inconsistant pings in games, and attrocious latency. My internet provider is Grande Communications, with 1.6mbps down, 768kbps up.

Things that are unusual:

1. Running a tracert to sites such as www.espn.com and www.yahoo.com take about 10 hops before they connect, all others time out past the router address at hop 1, or every single one would time out.
2. Pings can be fine sometimes, or just attocious at others. For example, ventrillo can be at 50ms ping when idle, but during a game, its 800ms + . I see this as a bandwidth issue.
3. I can ping out to any website.
5. All this has happened only since at the earliest late august.

Steps i have taken:
1. Contacted ISP. Got my dsl modem swapped out( old speedstream 5200) for a new one. Now i can at least run a tracert out and things seem okay...i suppose.
2. Tried to use a TCPOptimizer program. Not much luck.

Here are my results from speedtest.net

DL speed is about half, and the upload is about 1/6th of what it should be. This sucks. I need to get these clowns out here to test some lines, but is there anything i can do to help narrow it down for them so they dont dwaddle around?

if that were done to me, they wouldnt be billing me again for a year. that's just fucking sloppy.

As shorty said, options are limited. You either get shit on or pissed on, so take your pick.

I went with DSL because while cable can be fast..... getting cable in a 500-odd unit Apartment complex is probably the worst idea ever.

Shorty, did you go with Ygnition? What do your tests look like?

Im so happy that the FCC is challenging Apartment Complex Agreements like this.

Chances are if you have Grande (most of their customers are proxy from them signing a contract with the apt. complex), you probably don't even have a choice to get cable..

Jumping your thread here, but I have a question. I have decent speeds, but I get random disconnects all the time, have had every line from the pole to the computer replaced, it does it less now but I still noticed it 10-20 times a day if I am on the computer all day, any ideas?

Consider replacing your NIC card and check to see if your router has the latest firmware.

I had a intermittent problem with my Actiontec router and it was a firmware updated that fixed the problems. My problems were mostly regarding dropped IPsec packets for VPN tunneling.

And for those people who have Satellite DSL service, it is normal to have high latency. Other times it's just simple network congestion or a bottleneck on your side of the DSLAM.

Have you cleaned out your cookies? are you behind a firewall? have you rebooted your modem? have you scanned for trojans or virus? try downloading adware or something similar too check for spam. I think i use webroot.

These are some things that can be causing high ping...
