Hi everyone. New to the mustang seen and have a few questions. I just inherited a 92 coupe that i am doing a 4cyl conversion on and want to put a 331 under the hood. It is originally a 5speed car, my question is how much Horsepower would i be looking at coming from a 331 and also would a t-5 transmission be able to handle the power? Or would i need to go with tremec, c-4 or built AOD or something? Im kinda on a budget also so im looking for the most cost effective way to get it on the road as fast as i can. Thanks guys

if you want cheap , keep the car as light as possible, race on slicks not drag radials, and use a cobra t5, just dont miss a gear.

I've seen stock t-5's live thru hell with a good driver. I've also seen modified t-5's crater with a completely stock 5.0.

AOD's have to be built by a reputable transmission guy.

C4's will work out for a little while with a shift kit and an extra band.

Taking away the weight of the car will be some of the best insurance to saving your drivetrain.

I seen a TKO and a Tremec for sale over on www.westsidemustangs.com, might be something to check into.

Only downfall to a C4 is the loss of overdrive. My first C4 from Performance Automatic lasted over 3 years on the footbrake running low 12s eventually down to mid 11s before rebuilding.

Wow, drunk post for the loss. I meant extra clutch.
I can by that. You need to do a little more to a c-4. Prob. be more cost effective to just put a TH-350 in it.

I've often wondered what the cost would be to do that. It would be incredibly difficult for me to convince myself to put a chevy transmission behind a Ford motor, but we'll see.

To have a c4 built to hold the power doesn't seem too far off from a built TH-350, moneywise, then you've got to get an adapter.

The parts for a TH-350 are much stronger in stock form. And there many more aftermarket option for the TH-350 then the C-4. The only advantage the C-4 has is it fits the ford all ready and its lighter which is also its draw back i.e. small weaker components. The bell is around $300.00 I can build a fairly stout TH-350 for $600.00. It will last longer than a $600.00 C-4. IMPO

If its a pure drag car , go to Ebay and look up ******* Performance . Grab one of their C4 with converter packages and call it a day . I have one behind my 408W and its holding up great .

<----------- coming from a guy who builds T5's every day .

Right!! So many people think the AOD is shit. In stock form, sure, it won't last long.

Now, I've been comparing power levels and prices between Th-350 and C4. It seems the average prices are still cheaper to get a c4 that'll hold 700hp versus a th-350 that will do the same and I would still have to get an adapter.

I'll be sticking with my Ford stuff, and it will be coming from Mike's trick shift.

oh hell here we go!!!!!!
i guess all my C-4s that i had built where just flat out piles of shit.
i had one from Huges and and when it took a crap i did alot of research and i called Mighty Might and they sold me on a $300 drum that was brass filled to strengthen the drum. dont know why they sold me on the brass filled drum, but i trusted the "Pros".
the c-4 took a crap once again, then i went with a PG,it went faster with the PG.
then everyone said go C4 it will go faster.
well with my experience i will never use a C4,not even as a boat anchor.
a built T350 is by far a tougher trans than a built C4 "PERIOD".
as far as a AOD behind a chevy i would say the aod is very similar to a T400.
but i can promise you there is not a ton of aods in a all out strip car.
yes there is some out there i am aware.
