What to do for towing with Dodge Cummins

I have a 06 Mega cab dually. I want to do something to help with towing..... What should I do first? Im thinking air intake and 5in exhaust then get a programmer. Or should I just start with the programmer since it gives the best power upgrade? What programmer? I hear alot of good things about the smarty.

6sp or automatic? what's your budget?

the 5" exhaust is going to resonate and isn't really necessary unless you're making a fair amount of power. I always run 5", but if you're going to be towing, you might not like the resonance

I'm a Smarty fan... had them on all my CR trucks
Put fuel in the tank? Seriously, those engines make more than enough power and torque for towing. Nothing needs to be done.
I've never owned a vehicle that made more than enough power ;)
Truck is an auto....budget is probably a couple thousand. Definately not enough power, never enough power.
how's your tolerance to resonance? some guys can tow 15,000lbs with 5" straight pipe and not have any problems.

I'm sensitive to it. I would hate to recomend a 5" exhaust system to you and it be unbearable while towing... even with a muffler! The bottom line is 4" or 5", you should be out from under the exhaust system for about $500

the first setup I had on my '06 was a cheap 5" system with a 51" Donaldson M090535 muffler. I had less than $400 in it including shipping. very low resonance, but still had a little. adding a 5" resonator probably would have nixed the rest of it.

I'm not running 4" off the turbo (aftermarket turbo) back to about the axle, and then 5" tailpipe. straight pipe.

But I also have over 3 rolls of Raam Audio sound deadener on the floor and back wall of the truck. There is a bit of a resonance point still, but I don't tow and I drive above or below that point. I've got a Corsa muffler that I'm planning on installing maybe one of these days :)

I am a Smarty koolaid drinker... They've got great tunes, lower exhaust temps, you can tweak characteristics of the tunes, and you can download different tunes, etc. You don't need the full Smarty, but the Smarty Jr. is limited and if you ever do any transmission work, you'll have outgrown the Jr. I think retail on the Smarty is $685, but you can get them cheaper.

the highest recomended setting for the stock auto is level 3 which is about a 70hp tune. I ran my truck on 5 which is 90 and the tranny looked great when we tore it apart, you just have to be smart about the power. If your'e going to be towing, I would set it on level 3.

You don't need gauges at that power level IMO

on the intake side? really a good drop-in filter will be sufficient... and actually, converting over to a 6.7 air box and using one of their drop-in filters will probably outperform most aftermarket setups! but, if you're one of those guys that really likes to hear the turbo scream, a full aftermarket setup with the tube, heat shield, filter, etc. will give you that great sound and good performance.

You can piece together your own filter/pipe setup, but with your proposed budget, you've got plenty of room left for an intake setup.

I dont do any real heavy towing....My truck lives its life pulling a 16ft enclosed trailer around the country. I appreciate all the good info you seem like you know your stuff.

Don't let Forrest fool you he don't know chit bout diesel's!!! ;).

LOL He actually does know his stuff. He would be the guy I'd go to with any questions about diesel's.
Air intake, 5" exhaust(screw the muff), Smarty and plan on adding some sound deadner:)

Sound deadner really does make a huge difference in cab resonance, I have a 5" straight pipe on mine and before I had a bad resonance at 65mph, after its all but gone, its almost quieter inside too just because I killed alot of the road noise too.
yeah, but you don't tow anything... he's got a 16' enclosed parachute behind him!
the dodge autos suck balls. I drove one for something like 20k miles and tore up two trannys.

sucks for you... mine's holding up great :) then again, I'm only running a 230hp tune
My truck has 108k miles on it....86k in the last year and a half with an enclosed trailer behind it the whole time, the one I had was only an 8' trailer I just bought the sixteen footer. The only problem I've had was I broke the transfer case due to a little wheel hop!
My 06 can drag 10k pounds sideways up Ranger hill with only a Smarty Jr. If you are having trouble with that small of a trailer then I'd be betting you have a mechanical problem.

Well, the auto is going to make the drone horrible, at least with a stick drop it a gear, keep the revs up for the tow and there isnt as much drone, but lugging it with the TC slipping/enguaging/dissengauging is pretty narly with the drone:p
Like my old truck, but even still the sound deadner really does make a huge difference...
5" system with a decent muffler really wouldnt be that bad on the ole ears...
I hear that some sheets of lead work for great sound deadener.

LOL, they do! Helps smooth out the ride too!
Let us know if you need help on the install or parts. :)
Personally, I'd avoid the 5". I had one on my and did everything I could to cut the resonance. I put a 5" Walker resonator on there, welded a 2x2x1/4" angle to the top of the pipe and the drone was still annoying.
It kicked ass with the windows down, passing everyone, but to ride in, it blew (especially for me, averaging 145k a year).

Get a nice 4" stainless, decent intake and I'd focus on the tranny first because it will become an issue in the future with a programmer.
