What is the price range like for a stock 302 motor swap?

I am going to be replacing my worn out 302 in my vert with a completely freshened up 302. My buddy is going to be doing most of the work and I am paying him to do it... I want to be fair and have no idea what this type of motor swap runs price wise for labor. What kind of labor prices have you guys seen/paid for something similar?

302

You can usually get a decent 302 long block with forged pistons from City Motors for 8 or 900.00. I usually charge 500 to 750 for an engine swap in a fox.
Does it still have the blower on it?
If you buy from city motor make sure the crank and pistons are not cast. I did not know that and almost bought a short block with this combo. The do make a decent motor though. Oh dont ask any questions regarding performance upgrades. I was worried about piston clearance, and asked them about if I did decide to put a cam in there what the specs were. The ass hole voided my warranty :(

My question is, is the 302 in your car now still running ?
If so, Id recomment pulling the freshened 302 apart, putting ARP bolts throughout, mabye bore it to a 306, try to find you some GT40 or GT40P heads, but if not, at least port your stock E7s, maybe a mild cam, like an Ecam, 24lb injectors, Mass air, cold air, and putting a 100 shot of NOS on it....

But if your budget is only allowing you to do the swap...
Just a motor swap shouldnt take more than 4 hrs, and shouldnt run you more than $400 "if" he's your buddy.
The way I read that post, is that you have a fresh one to go in it. So your asking what labor should run on the swap. My mech buddy said $300, I said I was thinking more like $150 and he agreed. We ended up changing out the engine management harness, and power steering pump as well, so I paid him $200. I guess it depends on how good of a "friend" he is.
Thanks for the input guys. I have a 90k shortblock now that I am going to have cleaned, new bearings, freeze plugs, honed, new rings, etc... freshened up. As far as price, he said whatever I think is fair and I didn't want to offer an un-reasonably low amount of money so I was just trying to get a ballpark figure.

There is no blower on the car now but eventually it will probably have another s-trim (not as much boost as last time though!). Right now the car just has a laundry list of issues that really prevent me from driving it hardly at all.... leaks oil and trans fluid, starter sticks occasionally, really bad blow-by, vacuum leak somewhere so it won't idle right, transmission gets stuck in or out of gear occassionally... stuff like that.

I just want it to be a fun/easy to drive/reliable car so I am going to try and resolve all my problems at once... freshened up motor, new starter, transmission gone through, heads checked out, etc..
What are you paying to have yours freshened up? I'd like to do the same to my shortblock, if not find a fresh replacement at some point.
Don't forget to ad the drain back bung to the pan while you have it out if you plan to install the blower later .
