Ugh, stainless steel in the eye = hurts like hell

Well, I had a pretty busy day yesterday.

I had to go to Watauga to a restaurant to do some TIG welding and some other stuff. Then I had to go to Lake Worth to do some stuff. I had to use a grinder with a cut-off wheel to cut down some stainless steel 1/8" strap and drill some holes in them to attach them to three doors. Then I had to go to another restaurant and do some more TIG welding, then I was done.

I think when I was drilling the holes in the strap I got some stainless slivers in my left eye. It didn't bother me until 1am this morning when I woke up and it was KILLING me. I tried for an hour and a half to flush it out with eye drops, but to no avail. The wife took me to the emergency room at about 2:45am. They tried flushing it out and looked at my eye with a magnifying machine and couldn't find any kind of foreign materials. So they gave me a prescription for some antibiotic eye drops and pain medicine and gave me a referral to an opthalmologist. We got home about 5am.

Well, I called them and they told me to go ahead and come in as soon as I could get there. Got there, they had better equipment and found a couple pieces still in my eye, numbed it and used a q-tip to get it out of my eye.

My eye is still sore, and I have a hell of a headache, but the Dr. said it would be irritated for a few days. I can't wear my contacts until at least next Wednesday, so that sucks, but at least they got everything out of my eye.

Anyone else ever get anything in their eye(s) ?

Yeah... gasoline. I don't recommend it.

Mine too.

I feel your pain man. I've had s/s in my eyes more times than I care to remember. Also had flash burn from welding more times than I care to remember. Both are a bitch. Everything hurts. Light from a computer monitor, tv, sun, light bulbs, etc. It's a bitch.

Do you have a new day gig? Just wondering what you were welding at restaurants.

how do they numb your eye?
flash burn from welding

Yup, fuck that too.
My father in law makes home made mexican chorizo and I help him sometimes. One of the process is to take a few pounds of dried Chile de arbol and remove the little stumps and get all the seeds out so that it can be washed. After a few lbs of removing seeds I accidently rubbed my eye and "OHHHHH man was that a mistake". IT hurt so bad I almost passed out in pain. After a day or so It was better.

Sux hope u get better

Same here, heh.

Special numbing eye drops, they kick ass when you have a scratched cornea, too. I'm still having problems with my right eye every once in a while, I'll wake up sometimes, and it'll be a little blurry early in the day, then get clear again a few hours later.
I was mounting a strip light once and got shavings in my eyes.....it was a friday. After work I was stuck in bed unable to see till Monday morning.......24+ hours trapped in bed with your eyes closed sucks!!! Any how once I got to the eye doctor and we got my eye opened there was an orange ring of rust around the metal......He sticks my head in some vise contraption, shines this bright ass light in my eyes and tells me DONT FUCKING BLINK......Then proceeds to drill on my eye ball.....Does anyone have a clue how hard it is to not blink.....especially when your eyes is being vibrated around. well some eye drops and a patch that lasted a day and i was good as new......but it does get kinda blurry at times.

Another words.....I feel for ya man
Fiberglass insulation! I had to wait overnight as well, which sucks, cause its hard as hell not to move your eyes while trying to sleep!! Didn't have to go to a specialist though
yea...PAG oil, not a good thing, gives everything a blue tinge for a couple of hours.
i am constantly having stuff fall in my eyes. One of the worst though was brake clean being sprayed in my eye. I was helping my co worker and when we went to clean the rotors the nozzle was pointed straight at my eye. I would rather have been maced

thanks! i didn't know that
I can usually get stuff out of eyes... just gotta roll the eyelid over a q-tip and use another q-tip or piece of napkin or paper towel to get the foreign object

no fun, wear glasses!
had all kinds of shit in my eye....and had all kinds of extraction methods performed...i finally learned to wear safety glasses.

now by far the worst pain i have ever felt was getting a lil gas in my ear. GGGGGGGEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSS,it felt like a kenworth was parked on my head, that or someone had driven a railroad spike into the side of my head...with a kenworth . i'll take a metal in both eyes,a the same time....anyday

Hahahaha, ask Strychnine about that.

I work for a company that does restaurant kitchen repair stuff. We make and install the refrigeration gaskets/seals, on site TIG welding, build and install walk-in-freezer and cooler doors, install walk-in-freezer and cooler diamond plate floors, stainless and aluminum fabrication, etc. I'm the one that does all of the welding. I've welded up a bunch of sinks, grease traps, legs on stainless tables, etc.

What Fiddy said. They burn like a mother fucker when they first put them in, then they take effect and everything feels much better. They unfortunately don't last that long though.

I was actually wearing glasses when I was using the cut-off wheel on the grinder, but took them off because I was sweating a lot and it was running down the inside of the lenses so I took them off when I started drilling the holes. Bad idea.

My uncle is restoring a truck right now, a few weeks back he was doing some welding just wearing his normal glasses. A week or so later he eye starts getting red and irritated. He went to the doc and they thought it was pink eye. A week goes by and it's still looking bad. Found out he had some metal pieces that got in his eye and rusted! That's one of the main reasons his eye was discolored. He had it all removed but it wasn't pretty from what I heard. :yell:

I had to go through the same thing. The Q tip they used hurt worse than the drill, as a matter of fact, I didn't even feel anything when they drilled. Mine was rusted in also.
I was tig welding with a guy at work awhile back and he was brushing one of his welds with a wire brush and one of the wires shot off and stuck him in the eye......too the hospital he went.
I feel ya.

One time I got a tiny metal shaving in my eye from working on an exhaust pipe. I was perfectly fine until a few hours later when it started to hurt. The it started to hurt and water up so much you could barely even think straight. Next morning went to see my Ophthalmologist. He numbed it and then removed the shaving. Since it scratched the cornea it still felt like the shaving was in place even after removal. I used the prescribed drops and it took 3 or 4 days for it to feel normal again. Along with being severely bloodshot.

Since that time I've used eye protection doing just about any kind of work. Every time I'm underneath the car or even mowing the lawn.
