Started trying to get into shape...

1655 Views 20 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Paladin
I have finally decided to start working out again. I could lose 10-15 lbs and getting in shape will help me practice volleyball and basketball with my 11 year old.

It wouldn't hurt if this becomes a family affair.

Pic of me?
I'd say join CCLEA and join me in getting my butt whipped all up and down that PT field everynight, but I think your already in Law Enforcement so that would defeat the real purpose.

I am just going to do some light cardio and weight lifting. I am also playing basketball and volleyball with my daughter. She is a helluva athlete and I can't keep up already.

I need to get into shpae for her if nothing else.

Basketball and volleyball... skip the light cardio for tabata sprints.

You can supplement with light cardio for its weight loss effects but basketball/volleyball are going to tax your anaerobic system much more than your aerobic system.

She playing rec or club?

She's 11. I hope you didn't know that when you asked for her to call you.

I will take a look at the tabata for sure.

She is playing on school sponsored teams through the YMCA. Her school does not have organized sports at the elementary campus, they use the YMCA to organize the games and utilize the upper campus coaches for our teams.

I am installing a volleyball net (probably in a reduced size setting) and buying a portable goal for Christmas.

Cool. U11-U12 should be a 7' net according to USAV. Doesn't go up to 7' 4" until 13 and older for girls.

Since you are already buying the portable goal if your girl will be playing outside hitter, middle or right side you may want to look into this eventually. Probably the best piece of equipment my oldest (she plays right side) has used for hitting power. Nice to have setup and ready to go. She'll just go out there a few minutes a day and smash the ball around.

There is a lot of great juniors volleyball in the Fort Worth area. We're over that way at different sites about 8 times in the spring at various tournaments. Usually cheap to get in the door (3/adults & 2/children) and runs all day. Depending on the site they'll have U12-U18 playing. U15 and above is unreal to watch.

Here is the list of tournaments for the 10/11 season in NT:

She was asked to tryout for select volleyball but didn't because she is still doing dance and private cheer. The cheer season is just starting and they had their first competition at the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader competition at Jerry World.

The girl from her team who was asked and did tryout can serve the freaking ball like a laser. My daughter is not as good as her, but right now she is kind of doing alot of things well and may start to get more focused on a few sports soon.

She loves golf but I just don't have the time to play anymore and I am not really looking to add another freaking activity to our already full plate.

damn, tell her to wait 6 years, I should be full on dirty old man by then
Here is a Youtube video of my daughters Cheer Team at the DCC competition this month. She is on a senior Level 3 team and is one of only a few 11 year olds on the team, the majority of the girls are 14 and over.

If someone knows how or cares to post this as a ready to watch video, be my guest.

Good deal. Yea we tried the dance/club soccer/club volleyball thing for one year and it ended up in total disaster. Gave her the option of pick one or go down a level in each and she picked volleyball over others about 4 years ago now.

The youngest is club soccer/club volleyball. She did dance for one spring and hated it. So far soccer/volleyball hasn't been a conflict but my guess is this year it will become a conflict. We've been lucky with timings of practices in the past and tournaments but both stepped up this year. My guess is club volleyball and rec. soccer for a team she doesn't need to be at every game for.

Cool to hear you are so involved although I didn't expect anything different.
