Project car ideas wanted...

I am about to be in a position to buy a project car. I had one picked out and it fell through. The car I had picked out was a '68 Mustang coupe that had zero rust and was a rolling chasis with new and very nice red paint. It had no interior and needed almost everything, and I had the chance to buy it for $2500 and it came with a '95 5.0 and an AOD that needed rebuilding. The guy couldn't wait for me to sell my house so I could buy it, so he started working on it. It is now priced out of my entry range.

Anyway, I am looking for an early Mustang ('65-'73 coupe or fastback) as my first choice. I am planning on making a restomod cruiser. My definition of a restomod cruiser is a modern 5.0 EFI and AOD, modern brakes, modern seats, modern tires and suspension, and modern wiring. I do not want any rust issues.

I have a few second choices that might intrigue me if they came at a decent price. I expect most of these to be rolling chasis type projects so that I can put my drivetrain and interior of choice. They are:

Buick Grand National (in need of an engine and I would drop an LS(x) modern engine into it and I have a line on one but it is far away)
'64 fairlane to make a Thunderbolt clone.
Early 60's T-birds.
Late 70's-mid 80's GM (Cutlass, Gran Prix, Regal)
Chevy Nomad (probably dreaming considering my price range)
Early 70's Camaro
'79-'86 (four eye) coupe. (I could even be interested in a mini-tubbed coupe if it wasn't butchered and in decent condition)

I am going to be buying one in early October at the soonest, but since my near perfect car is not available, I am trying to see whats out there. I have a current entry budget of 3K. I have checked craigslist and this site for ideas.

I am wanting two things, specific knowledge about any of my project ideas and leads on project cars not currently advertised. For instance, if the late 70's-early 80's Cutlass/Gran Prix/Regal is to be avoided because of parts availability issues or hidden rust issues that the naked eye would not see, etc.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to avoid the idiot response from the guy who says "There is no way you will get a nice running (insert project vehicle) for 3K." I realize some of the vehicles will be nicer than others at that price, but I want to get the best vehicle I can for the entry money I am ready to pay. I may find out I need to save a little more to get a decent project, but I already had a great project for $2500, so I know they are out there.

Thanks in advance for the serious responses!

Rust free?
dunno, it was a craigslist posting. take a look, red, 6cyl posting for 2500. since I deive mine up there all the time he called me in there to look at it.
All those '64-70 Mustangs will have rust somewhere. Usually in the cowl, quarters, and/or rockers. For only $3k expect to find a car that is either incomplete or rusty.

If you're on a tight budget and really don't want to deal with rust, Fox body is the way to go IMO.

Better yet, keep saving money until you find a really good car at a really good price. Why spend $3k on a POS that needs $5k worth of parts/work to get into decent shape when you can spend $6k on a nice driver?

ditto that, would probably be even more difficult to find a rust free camaro for your price range.

Cleanly done four eye can be really sexy, maybe try to find a regal and make a GN copy with an LSx... I would hate to see a real GN with a V8 in it.

I know about classics but I found one with no rust, body work doen, and had very nice paint for 2.5K. It needed interior and drivetrain. It would have been perfect for what I wanted to do, a restomod daily driver with a modern drivetrain and interior.

I could spend more than 3K, but then I would have no budget for the restomod part. I have yet to find a car for under 20K that is even close to built the way I would build one. I built my original '70 Mach 1 for 12K doing 90% of the work myself. It needed everything, but was rust free.
Holy crap, that sounds perfect. I will be calling tomorrow and getting details and asking for pics.

I have only been on Ebay, Corral, Vintage-mustang.com, here, and DFW's craigslist.
I wish you the best luck... I got mine for.... get ready.... $800 and it had the cowl and floor rusted... everything else was a good texas car. It took alot of time and I enjoy it. Even for a coupe (what I really wanted and liked) I get a ton of thumbs up and it is exactly what you describe. AC, AOD, EFI, power disk brakes, comfy seats, TONS of suspension... everything.

Keep us informed and how your progress goes.

Dude for that 1500 one it already has a 9" rear end that alone is worth 1k if you wait til tomorrow it will be gone. Buy it right now if you know what's good for you and start saving the rest of the 5k it will cost to get it running and driving, then save the 5k for the paint job.

Good luck

Yep. look long enough, and you'll find a 3k vehicle with 6k of parts to go along with it. Usually accompanied by a nagging, bitching "Either that piece of shit goes, or i go" wife
I picked up my 69 Grande on craigslist for 3K and drove it home. There are some pretty good deals out there that you can stumble on.
partly painted rust free 64 gto clone project. I will sell it for 5000.00 local. Close to that in just new parts and built 12 bolt alone

I just found a very nice 65 Galaxie with syupposedly no rust, origianl non-running V8 still in car, comes with additional engine, and it needs everything, for $1200. I may have to go for the vinatge racing look in a lowered full sized car.

Your car is very nice and similar to what I would do with a classic Mustang.

LMAO, I hope I find that car. I am going to take my time until I find another deal like the one that slipped away from me.

The '66 with the EFI 302 has "typical rust issues" and the engine is out of an '89 LTD. The engine is not what I want, but we can work around that. The rust issues are the problem. They are gonna try and send me some pics to my cell since they are having problems with sending digital pics by email. I think their daughter will be sending the pics. They sound like really nice people.
