Edit. Here is a story on the incident.

LaGrange police criticized for dog shooting video

LAGRANGE, Mo. (WGEM) -- The LaGrange Police Department is coming under fire from the community after a video posted on YouTube and Facebook.

The video shows a LaGrange police officer shooting and killing a mixed-breed pit bull. According to police reports, the dog acted aggressive toward officers and a young child. But the owner is telling a different story.

"She was a big dog, she was playful, she liked to jump around. But she's never acted aggressively toward anybody," says the dog's owner Marcus Mays.

Mary Coleman says the dog attacked her six-year-old daughter.

"I hear a big dog growling and I turn around and it was running towards us. I shut my daughter behind me and I started to yell and kick at it," Coleman said.

It was late March when Coleman and her daughter were waiting for the bus. A dog wrestled out of its leash and came running at Coleman's daughter. Coleman was able to fight off the dog and go back to her trailer to call police.

"It followed me down here and it started acting real calm again. I got the chain around it and fed it some dog food. That might have been the trick, feeding it dog food," Coleman said.

According to the video, the dog looks calm as officers put a collar around its neck and only gets agitated when police use an animal restraint pole.

"These are the people that are protecting the town and they can't even load a dog up into the vehicle? Don't have enough sense to put the pet taxi on the ground," Mays said.

Now that the dog is gone, both Mays and Coleman are left wondering if killing the dog was the right thing to do.

"I felt really bad, I really did. I was like I didn't want them to kill it, I just wanted to get it away from here," Coleman said.

"She came down here and in her last moments she was terrified trying to get away and this is the spot they shot her at," Mays said.

The La Grange Police Department says they cannot comment because the case is under investigation. Mays was cited for having a vicious animal. He pleaded not guilty and his case is expected to go to trail on June 17.

I don't know the back story either on the dog.

From watching the video the dog looks non-aggressive. It appeared scared of the pole thing in general and would run away from it, probably because it doesn't know what it is or who the cops are.

When he finally got it on the dog it was just trying to get away. I don't think the cop needed to shoot the dog.

Pit bull or not, most dogs would be scared in that same situation too and try to run away.

I don't understand the reasoning for shooting him when the dog stopped moving.

Was he growling?? If so, what does it matter, you have him on the poll.

Anyone notice the second officer pull his gun, even though he already had a tazer in his hand??? WHY?????????????

Edit: And why are they having so much trouble?? That dog doesn't even have cropped ears.

On top of that, the dog was already tied to the back of a truck. Why not just call the animal patrol who actually knows how to handle animals.

That just pisses me off. It's a shame that those cops don't seem to know anything about dogs. That does was not aggressive in any way, just scared.

It looks like that was a small town. In many cases, small town cops are also animal control.

Either way that was just flat out wrong. I couldn't imagine how I would feel had that happend to my dogs. Although mine are a Chocolate Lab and a Dorkie(Dachshund/Yorkie).

That is so messed up!!! That dog was not aggressive at all, just scared and it seems that the idiot shot him once he calmed down. I've been able to leash and hold several pits when I've run across them running lose with no problem. I had a similar incident two houses down, a neighbors female pit had gotten out and my wife came in running to tell me she was lose and cops were about to shoot her. I go outside and two patrol cars are parked in middle of street with doors open and guns drawn while the pit is at it's front door scared out of her mind trying to get in her house. I yelled at them that she wasn't mean ( granted I knew of her but had never been around her) and I walked close to her and got on my knees and called out to her. She came running to me and laid down next to me, anything to get away from the two of them. I got her by her collar and walked to her backyard and shut the door. Only then did they put their guns away and one asked " How do you do it to not be afraid of those animals?" I told them that they are not any different than any other dog, you corner any dog and he will come out biting. All I did was just call out to her like if she was a puppy and didn't need guns and car covering me.............Geez............
