My brother was down visiting, He has an 89LX Hatchback. It had a white gel coat CComposites cowl hood (fitting sucked azz and too thin in areas). Had a black wing that came off of my 90GT racecar... His car is "wild strawberry".
It started out as me giving him crap for having a white hood and black wing on a red car for almost 2 years. I talked him into painting them (hood and wing only in spite of the roof being bubbled and flaked off). We went to ABC Auto to get the paint, hardener, reducer and various other materials needed. The wild strawberry is a PPG only color; him being a college student with limited funds agreed 144.00 for a Quart was too much. So we said F-it and were going to leave and the mixer said if we choose a basic color like black, or white or something like that he could mix it allot cheaper and in the Omni brand. I talked it over with my brother and decided to paint half of his car, the upper half with the original color staying on the lower half, that way we could get the hood and wing and roof... We bought a gallon of black for 53bucks.
When I got home I took a picture of his car to photo chop to show him my vision. Once I had my selection completed I hit desaturate, we both went WOW! When the top half of his car turned silver. I turned it black and it looked good, just not as good as the silver. We went back to ABC and bought a Gallon of Silver Metallic poly. ;D I paid him or bought the black from him and put it on my shelf. I was going to separate the two colors with a pin stripe, and then I thought WTF we might as well spray the pin stripe on. I looked at all my extra paint on the shelf and found the best color was Gold. But it was a base coat that needed a clear coat. BACK to ABC were we bought a pint of gold metallic poly.
It is my first attempt to spray a car, I'd rather not have tried the metallics but they turned out awesome, I had 2 runs that we sanded down, as soon as he color sands and buffs it will be great... He will be spaying the black trim on his bumper and the side mouldings on his own because we ran outa time before he needed to leave.
Thanks JimP for answer all my painting questions so long ago, I finally dove in and started spraying..
