New build - Chevy guy needs Ford help

917 Views 30 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Jimbo
As my username implies I had a 2000 SS Camaro convertible. Buddy (on these forum) has a '95 GT with a 351W.

After watching/helping with his build I'm turning to the dark side - going Ford for my next build. Chevy aftermarket SUCKS!!!

I'm looking at doing a '96 mustang. I have access to a Ford 360 block and was wanting to stroke it to a 429 to do a BOSS 429 themed car. Later on I plan to install a ProCharger, and will repaint the car (probably have it partially wrapped).

I've seen 430 stroker kits, but was wondering if anyone had a build up on a 360/390 already?

Any tricks to shoe horning a 360/390 block into a '96?

Should I just can the 360 stroker idea and just look for a 429?

Thanks for the help!

Keep it between the ditches!!!

fair enough...if you think chevy aftermarket sucks, drop the 360 idea...base it on a windsor. you can get 430+" out of a windsor and tons more cylinder heads/intakes avail, and the cost will be better. AND youll have more room
Put an LS1 in it. :sombrero:

The 360 is an "FE" engine and the Boss 429 was based on a 385 series block. Can't make a Boss 429 from a 360 mill. Find an early 460 block and start there.

Also, building a faux Boss 429 will eat your lunch ($$$). Be prepared. The 390 was basically a truck motor and not a good RPM mill either. Nice torque but a 385 series would be much better.

351W isn't big enough :D. 460 will have to be the power plant.

Is the 360 that much physically bigger than a 351W?

roflmao, not only no, but hell no.

I'd just build another camaro if I was going to do that.

I can find a 360 to 430 stroker kit. That's pretty close (if I went that route I'd still put the BOSS 429 branding on it).

Think I'll keep an eye out for 460s or 385 series.

I'm planning to go all out. I'll basically only have the vin # as the only original part after I'm done :D. At least that's the plan.

so 434 inches isnt big enough? yes, a windsor is considerably more compact imo

No need in "branding" it as a BOSS 429. The heads are semi-hemispherical combustion and look similar to a Hemi head. You can't put Boss 429 heads on an FE series (360/390) block. I would also guess that components for that 360 based mill would be expensive. Personally, I would take greenbullits suggestion and stroke a Windsor block to 42++ inches and get the cubes you want. The aftermarket is much better for that block, which is a 90° block as opposed to the FE series which is wider and takes up more room.

This guys in a world of SHIT if he thinks chevy aftermarket sucks and wants to build a FE Ford LMAO. Hell you can get chevy go fast parts at garage sales. :confused2:
LOL, guess that settles it... 351W or 460 is my best bet :D.

Thanks for the help/suggestions.

The only problem with a 351W going that big (say 430 range) would be cooling that beast. I'd also worry later on when I want to push 10+ psi.

Guess I need to find a good 460.
The "Chevy aftermarket SUCKS" but somehow I've missed the big wide world of stroker FE and Boss 429 speed parts. Hmm.

These things all have about the same approximate cost:

Rebuilt FE Ford
Stroker kit (crank, rods, pistons, bearings, rings) for FE Ford
Stroker kit for 429/460 Ford
One bare cylinder head casting for Boss 429
Complete 600hp small block Chevrolet

That's why I started the thread. I wasn't familiar with the Ford stuff so wasn't sure which way I should go.

Clearly the stars are against a 360 stroker, so I'll build a 460 and call it a day.

BOSS 460 should work too :D.

Should be rephrased: "Late model Camaro aftermarket SUCKS"
If it were me who was "going all out", I would get an aftermarket block based on a 351w, stroke it to 393w, add a set of trick flow heads, hang a couple hair dryers off to the sides, and have a custom cam done to tie it all together.

You can buy a complete 600hp sbc for $800? Fuck, hook me up.

Also remember that the 385 series engines weigh a ton. With that much front weight bias, the car will handle like shit. If it's going to be a drag car, not so much of a concern, but if there are corners in your future, go with the 351.

LS aftermarket is great! Hell you can make nutty power using stock parts!

This is going to be a screaming street/drag car. Just a toy.

I've considered going smaller with a twin setup, but would rather have the displacement up front and add the PSI later if I need/want it.

That's not a complete 460 for $800, it's only the stroker kit.

I'll go with an aftermarket front suspension (mustang II or something similar). Get the right springs and it should handle the extra weight well enough for what I want to do with the car.

Not planning to road course race it, so the heavier front end shouldn't be too big a deal (fingers crossed).

LS aftermarket is great?

There is only a couple companies that even make LS (specifically Camaro) stuff. And only a few options for the same part. Ford (specifically Mustang) aftermarket is much better established. A lot more options when looking for a particular part.

At least from my experience.

That's pretty cheap. Not sure I would trust it, since it's about half of what quality parts go for. I was thinking a number around $2k for all the things I listed.

But, you win. :)
