I am replacing the overhead light with a ceiling fan Saturday and wanna know what to expect. I have never done one. Yes I do know to cut the breaker first. I have installed motion sensor light switches and dimmers on the walls before. TIA

Is the electrical box properly supported (attached to a stud or just sitting on top of the sheetrock)? If so then it's pretty straight forward, just follow the directions that come with the fan. If not then you'll need to support the existing box by attaching it to some framing or replace it with one that can be attached to some near by framing.
It's pretty straight froward. You can do it yourself, but it's nice to have someone helping...

a LONG(2') skinny screwdriver will help a lot. Put some vacuum hose on the shaft of it. I have installed countless ceiling fans over these last few years and that one single screwdrive saves me a lot of time and frustration.

Also, try and stay away from the boxes that have the extending arms to screw to ceiling joists. It's almost certain to wobble using those. If the box isn't fastened to a stud, add one.
I installed a couple of ceiling fans this weekend. I would definitely ask someone to help. It's always good to have another set of hands. Just an fyi, the electrical box was too small for my fans, so I had to anchor the fans with one screw in the electrical box, and another without the box.

first thing...make sure that the box isn't plastic. if it's metal, make sure that it's screwed or nailed to a stud and is very sturdy. if it's plastic and/or isn't attached to a stud, mount a new box to a stud. if you don't want to get into the attic or don't have attic access (1st floor of a 2-story home), they sell a bracket with a box attached that slides into the hole and you use a wrench to turn the center, which forces the outsides toward the two joists. once it hits the joist, the two ends have sharp ends that attach to the joist. after that, you just wire and hang your ceiling fan, and you're done. make sure that the switch is in the off position and make sure to test the wires to make sure that they're off...some people used to switch the neutral, so the hot wire would still be hot if the switch is off.
