"Mandatory" donations at the workplace?

I am just curious as to how many other people have to put up with this rubbish?

We are heavily pressured to participate in United Way donations - and if you don't you get hounded until you do. If for some reason you don't donate -it seems you get avoided like the plague.

I've talked to a few people about it, and have been told it's "illegal", it's immoral, and everything in between. The most knowledgable person I spoke to said that it's only "illegal" if it were to be for a political campaign.

The CIO came to me this morning attempting to validate why I should donate. He said that I.T. is the highest paid part of the company, and that there are people who make 20, 30 and 40K annually who are donating - and that since IT makes more money than anyone - we should donate. Not that it's any problem of mine that they took that job to get THAT pay in the first place - but whatever.(The WHOLE thing is that it's an internal competition and our CIO wants our floor, the I.T. floor, to win)

Thoughts?

I've also been told that, it could be construed as "not following the company values and interests" - and can be held against you when raise time comes around. This is TOTAL b.s., and should be illegal - but you'd have a hard time proving it.

reason # 23980439508754689754098 I'm glad I don't work for a corporation.
Sounds like horseshit to me. Maybe you can find info on the TWC website or something if you don't get solid advice here.

Now, if they held it against you in some way down the line, and didn't say that it was because of that, then you probably couldn't do shit, BUT, if they actually said to you that it might be held against you later, that's where they fucked up (I think).
Sounds like a load to me... I donate to causes that I feel are important to me.. If he really wants to win the competition, he can donate all of his damn money!!!
The last time I worked for a large company, we actually had to attend a United Way presentation where someone would come in and try to solicit donations. After the presentation, they would send around forms for everyone to sign up for donations via payroll deductions.

As a manager, I was pressured to get everyone on my team to donate a certain amount, and I was told that "most" managers donated $1000 per year minimum. It certainly didn't leave a good taste in my mouth about donating to a worthy cause. I kind of felt like I was being turned upside and shaken wil they got what they wanted.
BofA asks us to contribute. They do little kick off parties and stuff like that. But they really don't bother us after that. Of course, there are the people that don't understand why you can't contribute, but that has never come from my manager.
fedex never gave a shit what we donated
I work to make money not to give it all back. If I wanted to work for free I'd be a volunteer somewhere.
That's not cool in any way, shape, or form.

What happened to appealling ways of helping you want to donate? Forceful donation is just wrong.

I wish I could provide some knowledge to your issue.
I'd tell them to mind their own fucking business. I got no problem with the United Way, I used to donate to them when I worked for GM. I do have a problem with people not minding their own business when it comes to shit like this.
At my job they are constantly throwing money together for someone or something. Assistant manager transfered to another store and they collected money for her. I was there for a month and they asked me. WTF? She drives a new lexus and we need to give her money? I was looked at kind of crazy when I said no. Since than I have been asked almost 10 times to for money to go towards someone. I may work at a bank but that doesn't mean I have money.
I thought it was funny that the bank was asking us for donations. Since, you know, we weren't sure if we all would even have jobs earlier in the year.
Damn Brooks, that's a complete crock of shit! Sucks you have to put up with that.
I work for a financial planning corp. and they always have huge United Way campaign. They hound us to donate time and many people donate tons of money, but if they told me to donate money I'd say pay me more. You should ask HR about that one. Unless they're in on it too haha
It sounds like a damned if you do damned if you don't type situation. I can imagine that is a very awkward position that you are put in right now.

Out of curiosity, how much do they expect you to donate?

Not sure on the expected amount, They've asked that the receipts be printed and given to one of the admins with the amount blacked out though.
At UPS we're pressured to donate to the United Way as well. In my first week of training they did a little speech and had you fill out what you would donate and they would shake your hand one by one to make you feel like shit if you didn't. The form they give you to donate even has a MINIMUM amount you can donate.
AT&T does the same thing every year. Want 100% participation from all groups.

Usually the Director of the bussiness group will send it to his peeps

Shit BofA has it streamlined. You go to a website, select the amount you want to pay with each paycheck, and that shit is deducted starting on the next paycheck. Hell they even tell you how much you SHOULD donate comparable to your job ranking, if I can remember correctly.
