when is it too late to lay some sod down? I'd like to fill in a few areas before the holiday company gets here. Haven't decided between bermuda or st augustine.

as long as you have about 5-6 weeks of warm weather so it can root down good you are fine
question, I have black soil that is tough as a rock. Can you lay sod over this soil & the sod still grow even though the soil under it is crap & wont grow anything

As long as it is NOT a rock, it should do fine.

I've laid sod in the middle of winter, and it's come in great. The sod is just dormant (as long as it is not dead) just like it is in your yard in the winter. It needs to be watered when it's put down, even if it's dormant.

Thanks Vernut! My land has the worst dirt I have ever scene. you know the soil that cracks like 2 inchs wide & 2 feet down. Thats my yard! LOL. Want to Sod the front part of my yard. But I have over a acre & figure right at half of that acre is my front yard. I figure to sod it right it will cost right at $5000 for the whole front yard.

So to keep the sod alive I will have to water it then. Which means I should put in some type of sprinkler system to keep it watered or I am just wasting my money then I take it

We have had very little rain this year, even for summer. It's important to keep that sod moist any time of year, but with it still hot, it requires more watering than it would in the fall/winter. I've got a little over an acre, with about 1/2 of it irrigated. The water bill can be shocking sometimes, but our water is not cheap.
