Last night i went up to Sears and bought my first big tool set. The original price was $1300, but i talked them into giving me 15% off, and i used my Sears card to save an additional $100. So it ended up costing me $999 for the 540pc mechanics tool set. It has damn near anything i will ever need. I bought them for school, Im going to TCC and doing their automotive tech classes w/ degree program. I get all the ASE certs and a associates degree in 2 years. I am very excited and i start tomorrow. 1st class is brakes. :slomo:

Here is a link to the set, it has a bunch of goodies. Online prices are a lot cheaper then in-store prices, but if you order online they said it could take up to a week or 2 to get it in.. And i needed them by Monday, so i got a hell of a deal ($100 less then the price online).

Need to google craftsman club and join.

BTW, I always recommend buying misc wrenches, ratches, sockets, extension, reducers, adapters and swivels wheny ou see them. Often you'll NEED duplicates or triplicates even if ya got a couple of buddies working on a project. 1 set is never enough, besides, you'll lose tools on occasion. Happens.
Also, nice kit it really is...but you'll need a torque wrench too. Also may need to think about air tools.

Good luck with all that... You'll be up to your eyes in tool debt before you know it.
Nice. I have always wanted to splurge on a set of good tools. Will be one of my first purchases after graduating.

I have a smaller set already, more of a loaner set from my dad. I have a 1/4 air ratchet, 3/8 butterfly impact for my air tools. I also have an assortment of extensions and swivels already, but i know how it goes, One man can never have to many tools.. And that is the damn truth.

Yup, that's why I'm a Craigslist addict now along with yard sales. :D

Yup! I've spent well over 18k in tools in the last 6 years.
That is now were near all of the tools you will need bit it is a good start.
good luck dude
good luck dude
thanks man. :)
That a good start, as mentioned you'll end up spending a lot more... Hell just as a "shade tree" mechanic I'll spend more money on tools needed to do some projects than I'll spend on parts... I always seem to justify buying them though:sombrero:

BTW: I started with a craftsman set like that, and its been great... Five years after I got it, I broke my 1/2" ratchet and they replaced it at my local sears no questions asked

I know the feeling on spending more on tools then parts to fix something. I broke a 5 dollar valve spring, and it took me about $100 in tools just to fix it. Valve spring compressor, air compressor to spark plug adapter ect..

The guy at Sears told me that even if they begin to rust they will replace it with a new tool. I thought that was pretty neat.

Bullshit! Those fuckers refused to replace/fix any of my tools cuz I showed up in my work uniform and told me that these tools were not for profesional use! I laughed and told them to fuck off. Snap-on FTW!

Don't go up there in your uniform, they are not into commercial use. Go up there in casual cloths and they wont say shit. lol that is what the guy that sold to me said as well. Never try and return tools in a uniform or tell them you use them professionally. Snap-On is badass hands down the best IMO but they cost A LOT of money.
Be sure to hit up diff pawn shops. They want an arm and a leg on sets but I have found good deals on individual mac/snapon/matco tools (I have 2 sets, one for work and one for home)
Do guys at swap meets buy those sets and break them apart to sell them individually or do they get another discount some other way?
BTW nice tool set. Thats the set I used to dream about out of the sears catalog.

Lol, ive been working on cars and trucks for more than 20 years and have atleast $70k in tools and still buy tools every month.
The only problem is Sears does not want to warranty Crapman tools, they only want to sell them.

Crapman functions as if it is a separate entity from Sears.

Sears replacement policy on Crapman tools vary from store to store and they generally do not stand behind Crapman.

Some stores will let you only replace 3 tools at a time such as Northeast mall.
The Irving mall will let you replace 10 per visit.

If you call the Crapman 1-800 number they will tell you that any amount of tools will be replaced at any Sears store. They don't have a clue as to what is going on.

Fuck Sears, I hope they go bankrupt.
