what could be causing a jumpy timing on a FOX?

Meaning? Your timing isnt staying "set", or its reading weird on the test light....
it's reading weird under the timing light. for instance, if I'm trying to set at 14* it's jumping between 12 and 16. so I guess you can say that I'm kinda guessing as to what I'm setting it at.

Does it have a miss at all? That could make it read back and forth like that.
I cant remember what it is called, but did you pull the inline plug going to the dizzy?

Spout connector
I really don't think so. haven't noticed anything. just got it home from a long drive after being disabled for about a month. got in it a little and didn't notice anything like a miss.

yes I pulled it while adjusting timing
I would check all the plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor. Sounds like a small miss causing the variation on the timing marks.

hmm, I'll check all that tomorrow. anything else more serious that could be causing a miss?

Several things could be causing a miss, but most of the time it is found in the things I mentioned above. If it was anything serious, setting the timing would prolly be the least of your worries. Check those things and let us know, and we will work from there.

cool, I'll let you know. thnx
sloppy timing chain, worn distributor gear, worn cam gear are the biggest problems.

There's a possibility that balancer is wobbling and of course, and the clamp may not be secure on the wire.

Very true, but I was aiming at the less costly things first. Hopefully he doesnt have any of those issues.
