They start as storm systems coming off of Africa's west coast and develop from there. You can't really detect, nor can you really tell where it will go until it gets a little closer. They like to ride against high pressure systems when they start nearing the states.

i understand that i guess i worded my question wrong. how soon are they able to predict a decent/good path for a hurricane?

They're getting pretty good at it these days -- usually know the general area quite soon and have it pin-pointed, give or take a few hundred miles within about 3 or 4 days of landfall.

Geor said it better.

Yup, in the case of Bill, they knew it would just skirt the eastern coast not long after it formed in the eastern Atlantic.

Some are different though, and in some cases the computer models are conflicting, i.e. they comps have no idea where they'll go.

Puerto Rico is pretty safe from them. It's Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic that get shelled unexpectedly. It's just far enough out that even when it does get hit they are rarely worse than a cat 1. They haven't had a category 4 or 5 storm since the 1930s.

We know about tropical storms and depressions well in advance usually but in cases like Hurricane Wilma in 2005 it went from a storm to a cat 5 hurricane in 16 hours. No matter what technology we have it's still weather prediction, there are no guarantees. Just plan your vacation and hope for the best! We've had hurricanes hit on New Years eve before and as recently as 1999 we had one in November.

I'll be in Cozumel in 2 weeks, hurricane schmurricane.
as mentioned puerto rico doesn't get hit as often as some of the other locations in the really warm water.... That said, trip to caribbean + hurricane season = travel insurance.

It doesn't take a direct hit to the destination island to really screw up a trip, grounded flights etc.

With this description, I can't believe no one has a black joke in here.

They start as a storm, then a tropical storm, then once they reach a certain wind speed, they become a Hurricane.
its been pretty quiet this year. when does hurricane season generally end?
Hopfefully it will be just another fish churner like the last two. I don't need another one this year.

Ike hit at the beginning of October, so I'd say we've got about 6 more weeks.
