Going E85...Questions

So I posted in a local forum looking for a place to get 110-116 oct... I had a guy post that I should start running E85 and that there's a lot of local places with it.

I've heard of people using it, but never with my app. What's the good/bad? Can I use it? Prep work?

Works good 105 octain, but burns about 40% more fuel. So you will need a big fuel system to support it.
where can I find info on this...
So E85 = 105 oct... Just burns a lot more fuel.

Any other info?

I've googled info... but was looking for personal experiences too... I'll check that out.

umm edit to my last post... what turbo forums?
turboforums.com
...... you try that site?
Cost depends on whether you are running a carb or FI.

Carb - stick on some quickfuel metering blocks, change float if brass style, change needle and set to alcohol style, and bump up the fuel pump - done.

FI? Bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, and custom tuning.

I converted my bird about 3 years ago to E85. I have a 12:1 cr pontiac 455. The engine is now tough to warm up, and it smells kind of like popcorn when it's running. Jetting had to go up about 30%, and squirters had to go up a little also. Performance is exactly the same as with race gas. And i'm ready for turbocharging now. Happy camper here.

E85 is roughly 85% ethanol in summer blends, and 70% for winter blend. Tune for summer blend and you'll be a bit fat come winter.

I have the car in storage, and went to fire it up after it has sat for 10 months. Fired right up, so E85 is good for at least that long.

Madmax here on the board also converted. Apparently they used to buy race gas by the barrel, and they race a lot. He's saved a shitton of money on E85, and is happy with it last I heard.

Cautions: If you have any steel components in your fuel system you will want to coat them, or replace them. E85 sucks up moisture, so you want to store it carefully. I run some marvel mystery oil in the E85 for fuel pump lube.

E85 is rated at 105 octane but people are running insane amounts of boost on it. And it stinks :)

I've been messing around with it about 3 years now. I've tuned FI and built carbs for it, even won a championship with it. I've got it in everything from high power turbocharged and supercharged street cars to n/a race cars, and have never seen a problem with all the bullshit about it being corrosive. Every pump i have used has been a pump designed for petroleum, every fuel system i have used was designed for petroleum, and no problems. Even pumps that say not for alcohol use, I have used with no issues. I can hardly stand the shit smell, its foul.
Madmax would be the guy to ask, he runs e85 as posted above.

His car runs well, i have seen it run.
I've been wanting to try it out, but it's not available in my neck of the woods as far as I know. Not yet at least.

Turbodave runs this fuel as well, he's a carb'd guy.

The biggest thing to remember, or consider, is that it takes a LOT more fuel and your fuel system needs to support 50% more consumption comfortably. (not that it will use 50%, but it needs the buffer for safety.)
I'm planning on an e85 street car with 160 lb injectors and a Weldon 2345.
I was checking out Turbodave's Chevelle the other day and he has got me thinking that a car running a shit ton of boost on E85 would be pretty sweet.
it is some cool stuff. Its very lenient when it comes to the tune, and you can get pretty aggressive with it. I've also had good results blending nitromethane with it.
It's good stuff, you just have to have the fuel for it as everyone as said. I have a friend running it and he loves it..he's running about 4 or 5 degree's more timing now (04 cobra as well). It's alot more resistant to detonation. I may switch to some bigger injector's myself and just run a couple more pounds of boost...I wish ford made some High Impedance Injector's bigger than 80lbs. I really don't want to use an injector driver.

I'm currently running 60#'s. On 93 I'm making 831rwhp and 740tq. My only problem would be my injectors. Everything else would support it.
I just don't know if buying all the shit to support the volume would be worth it.

So... you guys are saying this smells horrible once burned?
you need injectors , a pump, a tune, and you are done. You don't need all the bullshit like everyone tries to tell you, because they don't know shit about shit. i made 600 rear wheel with a 2.95 pulley on a s trim with a small shot.
On a carbed setup, say you jet up the carb and do the needed modifications to it, do you also need to run higher fuel pressure? I run about 7.25 psi right now, holley black pump on the motor I believe.
I'm going to be building a 13-14:1 434ci setup soon and am debating converting to E85.
