Doctor recommendation - Rotator Cuff problem

426 Views 26 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  71chevellejohn
I call on DFWSTangs once again, I need a good doctor referral in FORT WORTH - hopefully one who takes Aetna.

I have, what I believe to be, a torn or partially torn rotator cuff. I've been to my quack primary care physician who's been NO help at all. I am sure I have to get an MRI at the very least..

What order will they typically do it in? I have to go back to my physician to get referred to a specialist THEN do the MRI??

I'd prefer to not go to my regular doctor again if at all avoidable.

When I tore my superspinatus (sp?) muscle I went to my normal doc first. He then referred me to a specialist who went over my medical history, asking a few questions, did a quick exam, and finally ordered an MRI. Went and got the MRI, doc said surgery was needed, had the surgery, spent several months in a sling followed by several months in physical therapy.

You need to find out if you need a referral or not. Your insurance should specify whether or not they require a referral from the primary physician, or whether you can go to a doctor in your network at your convenience. I have Aetna too, and I just make an appointment with any specialist I need. Of course there are alot of different plans for Aetna I believe. If you go to their website you can select your plan and view the stipulations.

Just got through talking to my wife about it, it appears that we do not need a referral.

I don't have any idea on who to select though, I hate to do a blind draw on something so critical.
The Carell Group in Dallas. My brother did a fellowship with them a few years ago and had nothing but good things to say about the doctors there.

I'd recommend giving Carrell Clinic in Dallas a call. They handle quite a few cases for the local injured sports players including the Mavericks, Stars, and Cowboys. I'd be willing to bet you could call them and ask them for a recommendation for someone in Ft. Worth.
Brooks, I have a friend that saw a Texas Rangers team doctor (he has a normal practice too) when he tore his MCL. I can see if he has the contact info if you want. He was based out of Harris Methodist in downtown FW, so that would be a little closer for you than the Dallas suggestions.

That's a pretty common baseball injury, I assume he has some experience dealing with it. ;)

How soon can you get it Danny?

I have a day off coming up on Tuesday, This is the kind of contact I am looking for.

Thanks man!

Whatever you do don't let it just heal on it's own, that's what I did and I am now almost useless. Can't strain my arm without being in pain for hours after. It's a shitty injury
Brooks, I hate to tell you this, but you'll have to lose the arm:(

I just emailed him and got his out of office. Looks like he'll be back in tomorrow so hopefully he'll get back quick.

Call Dr. Bonnett at 817-481-2088, his office is in Baylor Grapevine and he's in network with Aetna.

He did my shoulder surgery last year and I am back to 100%. He is a super guy, Great Doctor with a fantastic sense of humor.
Mike wants to know if you'll still be able to work on the 2 with a messed up arm. :saevil:

Shit, I was messed up when I worked on it before!
Dr Sanders here in Houston is whom I would recommend. His hospital will fly you and your family here and put you in a hotel for free. See his website for info...

www.sandersclinic.net

You can call him and discuss your options directly with him and he wont do a surgery that isnt required if alternate treatments are available.
Dang Brooks, both you and Clifton have some messed up shoulders what have you been doing.

EDIT: I don't want to know
Hey Brooks, I had mine done last year and make sure you do the rehab. You might have seen me helping Daniel Large in a sling last year. It's a pain in the ass but I'm glad I did it and the rehab. I would have people come up to me when I was in the sling and talk about their shoulder. Alot of them didn't rehab and they still couldn't do a push up a year later. I had mine done in Carrollton at Metrocrest Sports Med. Let me know if you want my surgens # cause it's not close to Ft. Worth.
I hear the best Dr. in DFW for shoulders is Dr. Racanelli over at Dallas Presby. All he does is shoulders. I was referred to him for my shoulder problems but rehab was able to work them out.
