Ive cleaned mine, but I have the shit...
You need the oil to lubricate it though, I think there is an alternative to their oil though, not sure what though...
To tell you the truth I haven't even noticed any gains in Hp/Torque/Mpg since I put it on 6mons ago. I guess the only real benefit is it is "Lifetime"
Won't hurt to wash it, rinse it and wring it (or shake it depending on the filter) out then let it dry and oil it with air filter oil (wring or shake out the excess oil too) Motorcycle shops sell the oil as they have been using these type filters for a long time.
Yeah, you are going to need the oil at least.
take your lazy ass 2 blocks to VatoZone and get some.
Simple green or any similar spray on cleaner works well. I always use the K&N oil though.

Gains vary between cars, and the K&N drop in filters probobly arent much better over regular paper. The airbox replacement conical filters usually provide a decent gain.
When I smelled the gas in the car, I realized that I needed to do air filter cleaning. here How to clean auto air filter | Cleaning air filters there is a lot of information on cleaning the filter. I personally clean the filter with a steam cleaner, this is the safest way because the steam does not damage the fibers.
