Chevy Van Becomes Aircraft Carrier in eBay BUILT Series

When you think of a 1968 Chevrolet G20 van, you probably don’t think of an aircraft carrier, but for Brian Mackey, owner of Mackey’s Hot Rods in Huntington Beach, Calif., that's exactly what he hopes to see.

Mackey owns one of four shops taking part in a contest to see who can build the baddest custom vehicle with parts sourced solely from eBay Motors. Each shop will work to earn fan votes from viewers in a web series called “BUILT.” The 10-episode web series runs from July 16 through August 27, leaving fans to decide which car, and hence shop, best deserves to be called "BUILT."

Once the competition concludes in late August, each shop will auction its project on eBay. The money raised will then go to a charity of each group’s choice.

In Mackey's case, the project centers around a 1968 Chevrolet van, probably not the most exciting wheels you've ever dreamt about, but he and his shop have grand plans in store. Ultimately, they aim to leave the Chevy looking like an aircraft carrier. Expect the van to go through some serious changes over the coming weeks — the shop says it needs a healthy dose of bodywork and new parts from eBay Motors, but that’s what “BUILT” is all about.

The choice to follow a military theme ties in with Mackey's roots and his choice of charity very well. His grandfather, Charles Mackey, is a legend in model airplane design, while the chosen charity will be the Semper Fi Fund.

If there's one thing you can look forward to, it’s seeing a boring old van jump from drab to fab at the hands of a true California tuner. It's not clear exactly what to expect yet, given how wide the options are when pulling from a pool of parts as big as eBay Motors, but creativity will be key. The other three cars are a 1966 Chevrolet El Camino, a 1984 Porsche 911 and a 1970 Jeep Grand Cherokee Commando. Easily the blandest of the bunch, the van might actually prove to be a good choice: it's the most like a blank canvas.

”BUILT” premiered on July 16th, and runs through August 27th. Watch the episodes here.
