Buy tires online?

Im sure a lot of you know that it's just plain stupid to buy any form of electronics from any type of storefront retailer. Like Best Buy and the like. You go online and get it for hundreds of dollars less. Right? Well what about tires? Can that be done? Sure they are large, but all in all, they don't really weigh that much. (for car and half ton truck tires). So is there some place/places online that are the same as it is with electronics? You know, where you see huge differences in price as opposed to all the retailers?

i have found some good deals on ebay for tires. tirerack.com has decent prices.
I've bought a couple of sets of tires from tirerack.com, no complaints whatsoever.
I have used Tirerack.com several times. Just check with you local retailers after pricing with tirerack. They will usually compete with their prices.

Chris
But uh, so tirerack is noticeably cheaper? Haven't done much checking around, as I have with newegg and Best buy. By the time you have them shipped, do you still get a good savings?
Tirerack.com gets my vote. Never had a problem, and always had my tires in two-three days of order date.

Depends on the tires. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Same here, going 2 sets from tirerack.com usually very fast and never had a problem.
I use tirerack a lot. Theyre cheap, they normally have the tires to you next business day as they have a warehouse in Louisiana. Shipping normally runs 10-15 a tire, about the same price as taxes would be.

Yep in Shreveport, need a gun to go after them in that neighborhood tho, local for me.
I have ordered from Tirerack and they were delivered next day. Make sure you have a shop to install them and know the price before hand so you can make sure it is worth it.
I just got some nittos for the car and used onlinetires.com for pricing then went to Discount tires and had them match the price. I saved right around 200.00 and if I need anything I just swing by a Discount tire store and they take care of it. This seemed like the best way to me.

Good point, do they match online stores?

I didn't try because Discount did not sell the tires I was buying.
We had good luck with NTB. Discount wanted $152/tire, NTB $159/tire. They matched the price and took off an extra $10, so $142/tire. That was cheaper than tirerack.com. Their road hazard was $9/tire vs other places around $15.

Call around and let them price match.
Bought some cheap ass 315/35/17 sumis last week to pass inspection for $119 ea shipped. Tirerack wanted another $40 for shipping.
I've been buying from tires.com, but the next set I'm going to buy from a website called onlinetires.com. The are located in California. I run Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus and they are about 35 bucks cheaper per tire than anywhere else. I'd look into them...
another vote for tirerack.com I've bought 2 sets from them over the years, good deals

From where? Installed?

Yes they match but you have to give a little to include mounting and balancing. I just used 20.00 a tire for mounting and balancing but that includes free flat fix, pro rated replacement free rotation etc. Something you won't get from buying online

They beat Discount tires by 60.00 a tire on the nitto 315/35/17 and 50.00 a tire on 245/45/17 so I included mounting in my figures and was out the door for 649.00 for all 4 tires. I thought this was a price I could live with.
