Best place for a fresh shortblock?

Mine's not showing any signs of problems or anything, but I was bored and curious what you can get a fresh rebuild with stock components for? I'd even settle for a low-mileage stocker, but not sure how many of those there are floating around. When you buy a rebuilt one do you lose the stock forged pistons etc.? Does boring to a 306 or 308 affect the strength of the block? Again, just looking for recommendations for a fresh low-mileage 302 shortblock.

rick @ accurate engine (ftw) has done me right several times. he just dis some machine work for me on a 347 last month...
what's a ballpark price for just a stock quality rebuilt shortblock?
the pistons are what will drive the cost up...if you can save pistons, i can rebuild for around 450...with pistons/bore add another 400 roughly...these are just "ballparks" but will give you an idea. boring and pistons are the best way to get the tolerances in check and will offer the best longterm obviously...

I'll be needing one pretty soon myself. I can do all the work myself to rebuild one but id like to just go pick one up.

oh, and i didnt answer your question about strength.....the bore isnt where the issues are in those engines and .030-.040 wont hurt anyhow imo...stay on your tuneup and dont get horribly greedy..thats where its at...
The weekest link in the 302 is the block . Get a guirdle and windage tray while you are at it for a little more strength and power .
Apparently the cylinders are shit, for some reason I have one in my garage that's split down #5.

It was .030 over.

Doug, if you buy pistons be sure to NOT get pistons for a "5.0 H.O". They use metric rings. The pistons are more expensive and the rings are HIGH.
