I hate that I'm so nerdy sometimes.

I paused the vid at 0:12 and busted out a calculator.

Sending the msg on 8.28.09 means that from then til now the msg would have traveled ~1.08333 light years... or round about 1/4 of the way to the nearest star. Which means that even if Proxima Centauri had orbiting planets that could support life, the aliens would have already been on their way here.

Not to mention the fact that they didn't broadcast "farther into space than we ever thought possible." Radio and TV broadcasts leave Earth every day. The first nationally televised World Series game is ~58 light years further out in space than the one in the trailer. You can't cheat physics.

I can't watch the rest of it now.

Thought the SAME thing when I watched it. was gonna comment on it, and then scrollled down.

Although, I wasn't about to bust out my calculator and actually do the exact math.
Nice touch

That's why I like the movie contact. It seems like for the most part they got their science right on it. The signal that the aliens sent back to earth was embedded in a broadcast of the 1936 olympics in Berlin.

Now, as far at this movie goes, the aliens could be a migrant fleet, not localized on a planet. Perhaps all natural resources are used up, so they go around the galaxy trying to pick up signals from planets like Earth saying "we're out here" and they're like, fuck those guys, we're taking their shit...fo' free.

Plus, who's to say that these aliens are governed by the same laws of physics that we know aren't laws, simply guidelines? Who says FTL travel isn't possible, or even instantaneous travel?

I know it's just a movie, and probably a movie that won't require too much thinking to watch. I'll probably see it because I like this sci-fi shit. Hopefully it's not as shitty as "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
