Exclamation Choke.

This preview doesn't do this movie much justice. There is a LOT more going on than they let on. The lead character Victor goes around to resturants pretending to "Choke" on food so that someone will save his life, and feel responsible for him re: the old eastern philosophy; and send him money. Meanwhile he crusies sex addiction meetings looking for action and also might be the last direct descendant of... Jesus Christ. Have I mentioned that the book this movie is based on is by writer Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club? It's going to be worth checking out, the book was pure insanity.

The book was great! He really went to meetings and all of that to do his research. They're also turning another one of his novels into a movie...

I've heard a lot of people say he's a great author, but when I go to Amazon and read 2 and 3 star reviews, it doesn't really make me want to go out of my way and pick something up by him.

They've been planning on Survivor and it was suposed to be done years ago. Then 9/11 happened. I hear it is back in the works.

I don't think I've ever bought a book off Amazon that didn't have 3 or 4 people who "didn't get it" writing some lamebrained review. He has had a couple of low points, but Invisible Monsters, Fight Club, Rant, Survivor, and Choke are all pretty pulsepounding reads. Just got Snuff the other day but haven't gotten to it until I finish Clown Girl by Monica Drake.

Werd. Most people can't appreciate good shit if it's not the same, familiar old shit.

BTW, where are these sex addiction meetings at?

Also, don't know if anyone would be interested, but Chuck himself is on a book tour right now and stopping in Austin this Thursday. If I can get off work I'm going to head down there and check it out.

Choke was a great book. Very fucked up. Very Palahniuk.

I didn't like it quite as much as I did 'Survivor', but it was a good read none the less.

Well, I kinda saw it coming from the previews, but it wasn't nearly as good as the book. That being said, they did manage to pack quite a bit in, though they left out a pretty major part of the ending that I thought was a little odd. Not nearly as good an adaptation as Fight Club, but funny in parts and acceptable.

meh. I think you'd like his shit.

I'm borrowing Rant from a buddy of mine right now, and it's a hell of a read and I'm hardly 30 pages in.

Yeah, my buddy that I'm borrowing from said it just goes ballistic. It's really killing me because I'm getting to that point, but I've got a ton of reading for classes to do, which unfortunately take precedence over my entertainment.

I honestly was having a hard time getting into it, then all of a sudden I couldn't put it down and was finished with it. He has a way of giving you all these bits without showing you the whole. They just seem like funny little sidebars that don't seen to go anywhere, then all of a sudden things start connecting and it goes ballistic.

Just started reading Survivor late last week. I'm about half way through now -- when I pick this book up, I can't seem to put it down. I've only opened it twice. I'll have to check out some of his others.

His writing style takes some getting used to though, that's for sure.

Finished Survivor on Friday. I was expecting some more twists. Towards the end of the book, it got quite predictable. I've heard that his later work is a bit better than his earlier work, so I'll check out another one and see what I think.

Movies cost way too much money and I've had too much studying to do lately. Hell, I've hardly made it 10 more pages in Rant.

I'd say that was my favorite book he has written. How far did you get in? Usually his books take some intial effort for the payoff. Not all of them have twist endings, but it does, imo 2 or 3 times over in fact. One of the main parts of the ending wasn't even in the movie. I was a little disappointed in that.

Rant is a great book, I believe it's also his next optioned movie. Snuff was predictable and rather slow. He has a new novel being released in May of 09 I believe...

I saw the movie. It was like the book. lots of sex and silly things.

It's called Pygmy. I don't know what it's about other than what Wiki tells me (which could be wrong).

I just bought Choke yesterday and once I finish reading Fleeced, I'll get around that that one.

Should have kept going. I don't know that I would say it was his best book, but it connected with me the most. Invisible Monsters was pretty badass too. He actually wrote it first, but the publishing company turned it down because it was "Too disturbing." So he wrote Fight Club to disturb them more and it got published. haha.

Chuck Palahniuk's next book will be "Pygmy".
It's not due in stores until May 5, 2009. But you can pre-order it today on Amazon.

Pre-Order "Pygmy" On Amazon Today!

For those that don't know, here is summary of "Pygmy", right from Chuck:

I've just finished the first draft of a novel called "Pygmy," a dark comedy about terrorism and racism. The lead character is a 13-year-old foreign exchange student sent to live with a suburban, white, middle-class family. Oh, and they're Christians. The visit is for six months, and he's one of a dozen similar kids, all shipped to America to live with typical families.

The secret truth is that Pygmy is a terrorist, trained since infancy in martial arts, chemistry and radical hatred of the United States. He has six months to build a prize-winning project for the National Science Fair. If he succeeds, he and his project will go to Washington, D.C. for the finals competition -- where the project will explode, killing millions.

So far, Gerry Howard says it's the best book I've done. Fingers crossed for luck.
