We just got home from seeing it too. I enjoyed it, though the ratio of cock to tata scenes were way out of proportion.

Saw it last night, and loved it. Might have even been better than Knocked Up, though that may only be because there was the serious element to Knocked Up that kinda brought it back down to earth.

Forgetting Sara Marshall was really funny. I dug the casting of the main characters, and I thought the brit rock star guy was perfect. Played it in such a way that he was the stereotype, but really wasn't that big of a prick. Kind of nice almost. The blonde was the perfect shallow starlet, and whatsherface from that 70's show was great as realistic girl next door hot little thing. The supporting cast was great too. The South Central brotha that was off to see the sea turtles fuck, the giant Hawaiian guy (rofl at the "prepare the pig" part).

I don't know if they'll ever catch lightening in a bottle again like 40 Year Old Virgin, but they're consistently turning out solid, funny stuff.

Jared, what happened to your sense of humor? Those movies are classics. More so 40 year old virgin, but they were both hilarious.

My sense of humor is perfectly in tact. Different strokes for different folks, but those movies just didn't do it for me at all. It's not that I don't get it; I just don't find thier humor worthy of a chuckle.

That is what the experts refer to as: "crazy head". How someone can whip out that awesome poetry that you do, but not perceive something as wonderful as 40yo V as anything but genius is beyond me.

Most people will laugh at anything. I suppose I'm picky when it comes to comedy.

For the record, here are a few other widely loved movies that I didn't find exceptionally funny:

Supertroopers
Half Baked
Dumb and Dumber
Ace Ventura
Napoleon Dynamite
Clerks
There's Something about Mary

I'm not saying any of these movies don't have a couple of funny parts, but for the most part the jokes and situations just fail to crack me up.

Judging by your lack of taste in comedies, I'd have you pegged as an engineer with social awkwardness. You know, just like Big Studly.

However, since I know you I know that's not the case.

Let me ask you this then. Over half of that list were instant classics.

What do you find funny? What's a good comedy to you?

What you really should realize is that a "different" taste in comedies does not equate to a "lack of" taste in comedies. Chances are, our different opinions will result in you claiming your dislike for the movies that I find funny. Here are a few (in no particular order). I'm absolutely positive I am leaving off a few of my favorites, but I am at work, so I can't dedicate a ton of time to sit and think about it. Some of these aren't even what I would call wildly hilarious, but they made me laugh a lot more than the ones listed above.

Elf
The Jerk
Airplane
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Dodgeball
Friday
Anchor Man
Space Balls
Wayne's World
Austin Powers
Caddyshack
Young Frankenstein
American Pie
Police Academy
Tommy Boy
Happy Gilmore
Rush Hour 1 and 2 (the third one was awful)

How so? If anything, it reinforces it. I feel like most people will laugh at anything. However, I realize that everyone has their own opinion. To me, though, the movies you guys are defending are chock full of failed attempts at humorous one-liners or situations. They may get a brief "ha" out of me, but hardly a "LMAO!".

To give you more of an idea of my sense of humor, my favorite sitcoms are/were M.A.S.H., Cheers, Frasier, That 70s Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Two and a Half Men.

Never seen Young Frankenstein, and I would consider Rush Hour more of an action flick than comedy.

But the rest of those I can agree with. I was just curious, as there are obviously different types of comedy. You've listed some slapstick and "stupid" funny movies, which is not the same as 40 Year Old Virgin, but somewhat along the same lines.

Maybe it was your mindset when seeing them? 40 Year Old Virgin has got to be the best comedy I've seen since it came out. Everything else pales in comparison, to me anyways. I can understand Knocked Up. I thought it was hilarious, but I've been through that whole type of situation. Maybe I found it more funny than others, BECAUSE I've been in the situation. It was definitely not on the same level as 40 Year Old Virgin though, in my opinion.

Cheers was pure greatness. It helps if you watch several episodes so you can get to know the characters.

Mash and Frasier both have a lot of dry humor, and a lot of it I would consider "intelligent" humor. It makes you think about why it would be funny. Not knocking you at all. A lot of people just find that kind of humor boring.

IMO, Frasier is one of the most well-written sitcoms of all time. I feel the same way about That 70s Show. Pure genious.

Yes, I put some words in your mouth in that assessment, but I do not believe them to be out of line. Am I right, or am I wrong and you just chose your words poorly?

I agree that both Cheers and Frasier were some serious quality when it comes to sitcoms. That said, out of your list, MASH is by far my favorite.

I won't say that was one of the most well written of all time, but it was good. You have to have a certain sense of humor to understand it, though. Which I'd say the majority of the public doesn't have. Obviously enough of the public has it though, because it was on air for a looooong time. It was also the only Cheers spinoff that survived longer than 1 full season.

Not me. At least, the action didn't interest or impress me. The dialougue between Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan was awesome, though. It's a shame that #3 was such a letdown. I guess they ran out of funny shit to have them say/do. FWIW, I almost put the Lethal Weapon movies on the list. Parts of those movies had me rolling.

It was definitely not on the same level as 40 Year Old Virgin though, in my opinion.
I will admit, there have been several movies that I did not like at all (not just comedies) until I saw them a second or third time. It's not because I missed anything the first time. I think it has been because they were so hyped that my expectations were too high. After knowing what to expect, it's sometimes easier to just appreciate them for what they are. I can enjoy certain parts of the film without expecting the whole thing to be one big masterpiece. Jay and Silent Bob was that way for me. Two other movies that were like that for me (not comedies) were Pulp Fiction and Belly. I hated them the first time around, but now I like them both a lot. Some of those movies on that first list though, I have seen multiple times, and still didn't like them. Maybe I should give 40 Year Old Virgin another shot. I doubt I could bring myself to sit through Knocked Up again, though.

That's just it. I never implied that people who laugh at anything are morons. Good for them! Perhaps they are the lucky ones that posess a superior frame of mind and can appreciate the intended humor in more things and to a higher degree than I can. Likewise, picky doesn't mean that my selections are of higher quality. It just means that I seem to find a lot less movies funny. Again, it's all a matter of opinion. I believe I've clearly stated that several times.

Well we disagree on that as well. You added words based on your own mistaken comprehension which completey twisted what I was saying.

Those two choices are inadequate. You are wrong, but I did not choose my words poorly.

Lethal Weapon is a great example of the "buddy action flick". The "buddy" portion, where you have an Odd Couple relationship with the two main characters is the comedic element, but it's still an action movie. BTW, that whole Lethal Weapon franchise is absolute greatness.

That is a legit phenomenon. Anchor Man is the poster boy for this concept to me.

Hah, sounds like a little back peddling to me, but I'll take it at face value.

Please do take it for face value, because that's exactly how it was intended. No backpedaling here.

The only thing I said with haste was that those two movies were garbage. I should have said "in my opinion". I didn't know it would lead to all of this, lol.
