The Mars Volta

I guess I'm confused here. I've heard a lot of people talk about this band, and I just checked it out. It sounds like a well orchestrated musical abortion. Am I lost, stupid, deaf or just not "hip"?

They're good, but they tend to get a bit too caught up in all of their bullshit. I can only listen to so much of them, and I don't listen for very long.

De-loused in the Comatorium, I can listen to from start to finish, but never do. I can only listen to The Widow and L'Via L'Viaquez off of Frances the Mute. I never bothered/cared to hear any of their others and didn't even know they had put out something after Amputechre or whatever the hell it's called.

that's extremely well said.

however, my taste in music is that of a 40 year old man, so it may have to do with my lack of hipness

Never really heard of 'em, but based on a few videos I just watched on YouTube, sounds like they're very dramatic, operatic, likely great musicians, but being a great musician doesn't mean your music is good to non-musicians. (re: pretty much all jazz, lol)

Still, that little sample I just took was better than most contemporary music to me. I can see some 70's acid rock similarities that I like.
