I agree its a Coen Brother's movie so it will be out of the typical hollywood norm. Good movie.

The ending is Tommy's character's reflection that in his older age the world is becoming a terribly, rapidly changing place that has no place for him.

Every person at some age realizes this. (example....I used to think I knew everything about music in the 80s90s.....now in my late thirties now I don't know shit or who is the hot band today.)

Tommy Lee Jones (Sheriff) sees the world as this:

Anton (bad guy) is represented as the devil/evil. He doesn't kill for money but for priniciple because that is who he is. He consumes everything in his path.

Carson (Woody Harrelson) is an angel send by God (man in big tower) to warn Moss and to try and protect him but understands that Moss has free will to do as he choses.

Moss is a decent man caught in evil's web trying to confront it head on and beat it.

The Sheriff comments that as a good will enforcer, he is a step behind, outdated and has no place in a world like this.

Those things I figured. You word it well. Thanks... but I meant by weird little things that the brothers threw in and I'm not sure why they bothered to include it or why the movie went that direction. For instance:
Why does Anton have the wreck? To show he has the money? His vulnerability? The demise of Moss was cheap and quick? Seems silly he would let his guard down so easily.

Anton's wreck does puzzle me. I'm thinking its either God taking a swing at him or the movie is showing that we all, good or bad, live in a world of chance. Life can be fragile and you never know what comes around the corner or in Anton's case....an intersection.

On Moss I believe that it was trying to show that Moss let his guard down due to a pretty lady (which happens to the best of us.)

I had the same complaint. Very solid, good movie up until the last 20 minutes. It seemed as if they blew by what should have been the ending and then said "uh oh....we missed our exit, just pull over right here." Ending really fucked up a good movie.

Incredible film, true to the equally incredible book (by Cormac McCarthy) to the very end.

No typical, cop-out Hollywood feel-good ending that everyone seems to need these days.

Instead it simply ends w/out fanfare - much like real-life.

For those who liked this story, you'd probably also like McCarthy's book "The Road," sure to be a movie in the not-too-distant future. It's about a father and son on the road to someplace better after nuclear war has left America an ashened wasteland.

What about when the Sherriff was looking through the lock, and Anton was also looking through the lock, with Anton hiding behind the door, then the sherriff re-entering the crime scene, a very curious sidetrack that im still trying to grasp at.

Also, i find the lack of an ending interesting, but i dont nessisarily agree with it, because proper stories do have a build, climax, resolution, ending, and this seems to have skipped it.
Even deliberately choosing to do so doesnt change the fact that its a bad process.

The dialogue in the movie was great, but yes, again, im still finding the ending very vexxing. The point that they didnt show Moss directly dead was very very intriguing. His wife never mentioned him, only her mother as dying, was perplexing. I only assumed Moss disappeared with the money, and the body at the morgue was possibly the mother in law.

I saw it more as a gothic take on morality. The drugs are the degradation of modern society. Moss isn't necessarily a good guy, just a normal guy who can't resist the temptation of the money. And looks at the hunt as a challenge. He's always attempting to outsmart the Mexicans as well as Anton. Anton was just straight evil that comes with this world, while Bell acts as the moral compass for the world. He thinks the world is changing too fast for him to keep up, but the conversation with his friend as the end changed that a little. Because there has always been evil in this world(the tale from the early 20th century) As far as the carwreck at the end, I think it goes with the story of evil, it shows evil isn't going to die off.

i interpreted the car wreck as chance, or as the prospect of mortality interposing itself on Anton.

Wasn't wanting a shoot out at the end, but I don't like it when you change your "style" of shooting. The way they were telling the story changed at the end to, I assume, create a mystery as to what really happened maybe? I'm don't know, but up until that last 20 minutes, I was enjoying this movie.

Coen Brother's movies ranked:

1. The Big Lebowski
2. Blood Simple
3. Fargo
4. Raising Arizona
5. Miller's Crossing
6. The Hudsucker Proxy
7. Crimewave
8. The Ladykillers
9. Barton Fink
10. The Man Who Wasn't There

Big Lebowski.

"What the fuck are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please."

Fast forward to the next scene...

"My wife is not the issue here. I hope that my wife will someday learn to live on her allowance, which is ample, but if she doesn't, sir, that will be her problem, not mine, just as your rug is your problem, just as every bum's lot in life is his own responsibility regardless of whom he chooses to blame. I didn't blame anyone for the loss of my legs, some chinaman in Korea took them from me but I went out and achieved anyway. I can't solve your problems, sir, only you can."

That's just pure greatness. I still say that Raising Arizona is not one of there best and I know that there's a whole lotta people that would argue otherwise right along with you, but I just didn't think it lives up to the hype.

I've seen it twice, since the ending is just so... weird. It's worth it, I love the movie.

The ending with Tommy Jones' dialog talking about his father... I feel that he's discussing how life is tough, and that we need to keep going forward. Even when we're in the worst of it, we much push ourselves to prevail. His father riding ahead with the fire through the snowy windswept valley signifies that his father went through the worst of it in his own time also to get to where he is. For now, he (Ed Tom) has to make the effort to continue forward progress. In the end, they'll be together again.

I saw it and liked it. Definitely not your typical Hollywood "happy ending" movie, great dialogue, great characters... would like to read the book to see how it compares.
