Top Ten Rock Guitarists

Ok, so I started the bassist thread, someone else started the drummer thread. Bass and Guitar is the meat and potatoes of any band, so that's mainly what I listen to. How about a guitarist list?

(no certain order)
Eric Clapton
Richard Thompson
John Petrucci
Frank Zappa
Buckethead
Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Eric Johnson
Keith Richards
Randy Rhoads

Jeff Beck
Mark Knopfler
Les Paul
Chet Atkins

CLAPTON IS GOD.

Randy Rhoads is only famous because he died so young and tragically. Berkley School of music shits about 50 of him every time they have a graduation. It's kind of like when people say Jim Croce was badass. He died before anyone could figure out if he was ripping off James Taylor or Cat Stevens.

Give me a dollar.

They're really good, if you're going to do a search for them make sure you put "Oh, Sleeper". My brother was doing the merch for them when they first started touring, Nate is with them now on tour doing the merch. Cool bunch of guys, they used to be in Letter Twelve, then Terminal, and that's where Shane, and Micah(vocals) came in to make Oh, Sleeper.

These aren't in any special order.

SRV
Hendrix
Clapton <- Agree with the God statement
Bryan Mays <- Also my favorite Astrophysicist
Yngwie Malmsteen
Dimebag
Jeff Beck <- surprised more people didn't mention him..
Prince <- most underrated guitarist IMO.

lmao!

srv played almost every genre that you can imagine, and he played it well. yes, he is typically known as a blues guitarist, but my god, he's played rock for sure.

ever listened to in-step? hardly a "blues" album at all, and the same can be said for 'couldn't stand the weather'

how exactly are you defining "rock"? who defines "rock"? becuase half the name being thrown out here are much more 'metal' in my opinion thean they are 'rock'.

and i didn't see aynone complain about clapton not being rock (i do believe he belongs to be up there, righ tunder SRV). clapton is purely blues-driven rock at best. if you hear him talk about his influences, it's almost nothing but delta-blues.

but my mention for 'pure rock' guitarist is Joe Walsh. Just doesn't get better than Walsh.

Actually, you're incorrect on the Prince statement. The guy is a genius. Anybody who can pick up any instrument and not just play it, but play it well deserves a nod in my book. Best? Not really. Underrated? Definitely.

I won't deny that he is a good musician, but his complete lack of ability to produce good music negates that for me.

You forgot Eddie? I am no Van Halen fan, but the man can freakin jam. And I hate to say it, and I certainly wouldn't put him in the top 10,much less buy any of his music, but Prince is one hell of a guitar player too.

Edit... After further reading, I see there are some Eddie and Prince reconizers in here.

I don't consider someone who can play solo's a great guitar player necessarily. Many are, but there is so much more to playing guitar than playing a solo....

Adam Jones from TOOL for writing complex timing riffs and always inventing new styles.

Tom Morello for being innovative

Bring on some unique players!

I of course 100% agree. When I picked up a guitar my sole reason was to learn so I can try to invent like Adam. I use to play a ton of their covers in my band and I can tell you, as a band, they are the absolute hardest band to cover.

Some riffs and songs are not technically hard to play on guitar, but throw in some off time 5/4 or 7/8 structure and try to play that tight with your drummer and bass player....... TOOL puts all other bands to shame really. But hey, what do I know???

Way too much wanking for my taste. I'm not a fan of any of those guys. That's not saying they aren't good, and I'm sure they have a spot on there somewhere. You know how these lists go... it might not be THE top ten, but it's my top ten.

Throw Alex Liveson and David Gilmour on that list, and you have a fairly comprehensive list of the better classic rock guitarists of all time.

Modern, i'd say Tom Morello, Adam Jones, Tim Mahoney, and Doyle Bramhall II are among the best. Doyle Bramhall II is still one of the most amazing guitarists I've ever seen live.

Maybe not the best of all time, especially by SOHC's standards... but I like them:

Tony Iommi
Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrix
David Gilmour
Dimebag
Zakk Wylde
Tom Morello
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
Kim Thayil
Kirk Hammett
Eric Clapton

Oh, and Dean Ween
