Shooting a competition

Red River Firearms is putting on a charity benefit shoot tomorrow (Sunday, 9-26-10) for a retired officer here in Sherman. I decided yesterday that I'm going to partake.

Trophies for the winners, and I think that there may be two different classes.

It will be IDPA formatted, but a little more beginner friendly, since most of the people shooting are more casual shooters than anything else (from what I hear).

I'm gonna give it a shot and see how I do.

Cool deal man. Sounds like a blast. Once I get my promotion at work and a little more coin starts coming in I plan on getting into the sport. Will this be your first IDPA type shoot?

I've gone to a few semi-formal....ehhh, practice type events where the regular IDPA'ers run some stages, and I've ran some at those deals. I've never done anything where score matters, though. So I guess, yes, this will be my first actual event.

I'm excited; about to go make an ammo run when I get off work in about 15 minutes.

I'll update Monday on how everything went.

All I've gotta say is wow!! I had a blast, and I got to meet another DFWStanger. I forget his SN, but he rides a Streetbob, and his name is Johnny.

He's also noticeably better at the shooting than I am. Congratulations Johnny!!

My thoughts: It was a helluva learning experience. I need to work on my speed, as far as shifting from target to target, and staying on target for subsequent shots. Normal range shooting, I am much faster, without sacrificing accuracy, but with the little bit of pressure added in this situation, it got to me.

Also, I need to work on my longer range accuracy. I left a little bit to be desired in that area. All in all, I'm not discouraged in the least. It actually made me hungry to improve.

Sidenote: There was a cop there who's name was, and I shit you not, W. Glock.

And he shot an XD.

Glad you went and had fun! I was going to go to it, but circumstances took me out past Decatur that day.

You missed out, it was a good time. Hope your circumstances were nothing bad.

How many people were in the competition?

I believe there were 32 shooters competing.

And same to you.

The Dreaded Swinger. Nuff said.

It's funny how people meet, I just caught your name on the sign in sheet and recognized it.

I may be shooting this Thursday evening, if you're interested. After hours deal. Lemme know.

It's amazing how a little pressure and movement will make an excellent target shooter humble. I thought I was a badass putting 2-3 inch groups at 7 yards lane shooting until I started practical shooting. I shoot IDPA with Cross Timbers IDPA on the east side of Fort Worth.

Hell, there wasn't any movement involved, lol. It was more the audience, and the timer that got to me. I plan on getting better, though.

I think it's close to an hour, give/take. I'll find out for sure and let ya know.

Yup. That buzzer goes off and all your plans go out the door. I find it helpful to visualize what you'll see as you go through the stage before you're up to shoot. Just like a first person shooter game. You can also count your shots in your head (or even whisper them) so you can anticiapte your reloads.

Shooting on the move is even harder but quite a rush when you see zero downs.

Work on accuracy first. Speed will come naturally. That doesn't work the other way. You can't build up speed then hope for accuracy.
