this looks like it might interest me. just wondering if anyone has any knowledge on it. i am still on the waiting list for the dallas pistol club, and this looks like a good way to get a little range time and learn something as well while i wait. thanks folks.

I want to try it out while I am home in October. I really.... really want to try a 3 gun competition, but I can't find anything for October. I will give IDPA/USPCA a try and see how I like it.

If you go, please post your experience.

Good one, Fox!

I shoot with Cross Timbers IDPA on the east side of FW. They have weekly matches plus two weekend ones each month.

www.ctidpa.com

There's a page for new shooters. Read it. Email them and get in. Let me know when you go the first time and I'll try to be at that match. New shooters get a mentor assigned on their first match.

Say bro, out of curiousity, about what does it run a month in fees and ammo to play? What caliber are you shooting? Are you doing 3 gun or just pistol or...

Except for the first match, you have to be a member of IDPA to participate in IDPA. That's $40 a year. Match fees are $10 to Cross Timbers IDPA, $10.28 to the range. You typically go through 50-60 rounds per match so that's roughly $10-20 for factory 9mm-45. If you become a member of CTIDPA, your match fees are only $5. Plan for $30-40 a match. Attend as many or as few matches as you want per month. Some months I went every week. Sometimes I won't go for two months.

The weekly matches are pistol matches. After all, it is IDP(istol)A. CTIDPA (the club) runs carbine matches maybe 3-4 times a year. I built an AR-15 just for that. It's so much more fun to run and gun, than stand still and shoot at static paper targets. We did a two-gun match last year. Transitioning from the carbine to a pistol and back adds a level of fun to it.

You don't need to spend a lot on gear the first few matches. Go in with generic stuff, like the stuff that comes free with XDs. If you decide you like the sport, then you can get better working stuff. No one expects you to be competitive the first few months of this. The learning curve is short so it's quite encouraging.

I shoot factory 9mm. It's cheap. Recoil is minimal, which means follow up shots are quicker and more accurate. 9mm, 40 and 45 are the most commonly used guns/ammo. Most of the guys that shoot 40 or 45 load their own.

Some people are in it to make sure they can draw their pistol from concealment, acquire targets fast and put hits with accuracy. Some people are in it for the game. I shot my first year of IDPA using concealed carry gear (inside the waistband holster, regular clothes, compact gun). After that, I do it for the fun of the game using an outside the waistband holster, full length pistol, etc. You put in what you want to get out of it. It's not tactical training but it makes you a better shooter. The first few matches are quite a humbling experience.

It's like drag racing. Your first time down the track, so much shit is happening and you get nervous. After a while, it's pretty routine and you're just improving your launch. At the same time, it's NOT like drag racing where you dump more money into your gear to get better times. In IDPA, it's all about trigger time and learning from those who have mastered it. Go in with a stock service pistol and focus on your skills and not the gear.

i was unaware of IDPA until I happened upon this thread. I'm going to do some research, but right off the bat does anyone know of a club in or around Denton that participates in these events? I'm very interested, as just last night I was telling some friends I would really like to become efficient at "move and shoot".

I haven't shot the Thursday matches lately. I just came off vacation and have been busy at work and at home catching up with stuff. I'll probably shoot the next Thursday one (Aug 5).

Last Thursday would not have been a good one to watch. It was a BUG Match (back up gun), where everyone shoots small subcompacts or pocket pistols. The protocol was a little different to accomodate the small guns.

We do have a carbine match tomorrow at JCSSA. I will be there to shoot it. Sign up time is at 8:30. Hammer down at 9:00. We run it much like an IDPA match but with a few modifications to the rules. If you guys go, it will be easy to find me. I'll be the only Asian guy there. It's best to contact the email address at CTIDPA.com. That way the Chief Safety Officer knows you're coming.

Cross Timbers IDPA doesn't have weekend matches, except for once a month. You still have to do the New Shooters class first though. But email the contact on the website. Sometimes the Chief Safety Officer (David) will make exceptions and do a short one-on-one briefing with you instead of the class. Those are exceptions meant for people who have shot with other practical shooting clubs. I know you're not a newbie to handguns so it won't hurt to ask.

PM me if you're gonna come to the Carbine Match.

Ok, they have a ranking shoot this Tuesday. Basically, shoot and see how you place withing IDPA "skills". Dunno if I can do Tuesday, probably not. Thursdays, they still practice IDPA at 7pm. I'll see if I can swing this Thursday.
