newb shotgun ammo questions

i was going to head out to targetmaster sometime, but they require non-steel shot. i have some winchester superx from walmart that says it's unplated, and some remington that doesnt' say anything. both are buckshot if that makes any difference.

how can you tell the difference?

Get a really big magnet and fire off.... But seriously, Winchester super x is lead, remingon is more than likely also lead, you can use a big magnet to verify.

Most steel shot I've seen also had something on the box indicating it was steel shot.

Steel shot is also rather expensive compaired to lead, your wallet can tell the dif. I want to go unload some excess 00 buck now.

I might be wrong but I think most steel shells are high brass.
