How long did it take to get CHL

I finally filled out all the paper work and am sending it in tomorrow. About how long did it take you from the time you sent it until the time you got the license in the mail?

Just curious. Not that I"m in a hurry or anything.

Check out http://www.texaschlforum.com/

Some people are getting them in under a month now!

Mine took about 4 months, but there was a problem on the application that I had to fix and send back, and it slowed it down considerably.

Mine took about 6 weeks, and that was with my first pic being too light and having to take a second picture.... alot quicker than what I was expecting.

Mine took around 3-4 months. Two guys at work have been waiting around 3 months now. Seems some are quicker then others.

I suspect those with simple job history and such go quicker. Myself and these others have been many places over the last 5 years and I think when you put Iraq and/or Afghanistan stuff on there - it takes longer. (the other 2 have that) Mean while a guy I work with who has only been a normal civilian got his about 1.5 months faster then I did.

Edit: No proof of course, just opinions. The guy that got his 1.5 months sooner then me - we both have clearances, almost the same jobs for the last few years - only difference was my overseas contracting work. We took the same class and submitted everything at the sametime. Oh, and of course I used the verteran's discount.

I took it just over a month ago and I got my license last Friday. My wife and friend that took the class at the same time haven't gotten theirs yet though so I'm not sure how I got lucky. I'm thinking a month is a pretty good average now though.

My wife sent hers off at the end of August of last year and it took almost three months. A guy I work with sent his off either the last week of December or first week of January and he's already gotten his back.

i did mine back in 07 and it took 3 weeks. No BS. I mailed it off, checked my email a few days later and got my pin. When I logged in to see what stage it was in, it told me sent/shipped/or whatever is ( it was 3 yrs ago, I dont remember the exact phrase.) so 21+/- a few days.

edit- I believe I also shipped it first class priority. Some say not to ship it with signature confirmation or tracking. I say its dealers choice. I wanted to know where legal documents were with all my info on them.

Just got mine 2 days ago, and we (Sean88gt) took the class on Dec 29th. I also had missed signing one of the documents and they sent it back to me, so I'm sure that added at least as few days extra, but still got it fast.

Assuming everyone reports accurately, does not seem to be a whole lot of consistency.

It [mostly] depends on the work load of the agency. Some "peaks and valleys" in registration, I guess.

There isn't. It depends on what time of year you do it and the political climate. Back in 08 there was a giant flood of apps sent in backlogging the system to the point where if you got it in 180 days you were doing good. It seem that it is much much faster now that they have hired more people to process these.

The one huge hangup in the process is the on site background run by DPS troopers. It seems this step can take the longest.

Well, if you haven't gotten anything back from them telling you that you forgot to sign this/that... you should be getting yours pretty quickly.

Hope your photo turns out better than mine did. I look like a fukn hungry wolf eel.

It's been a whole two weeks. Haha. Nothing yet. How long did it take to get a PIN? Do I get it via email or snail mail?

Should be snail mail ... some people report getting there PIN right after getting the CHL in the mail .... best thing to do is just to forget about it till it shows up. You can also call the DPS office and get a status update but you may need your PIN.

So, in general here is a breakdown.

4 of us got CHLs in my office.

2 of us were prior military, were in Iraq/overseas.

2 of them were just civilians, no real records.

Prior miitary, it took 2-3 months after PIN I believe. I may have even been 4 months or whatever.

The normal folk took around a month after PIN.

Edit: I know a prior post contradicts this a little, but we actually talked it through yesterday so this post is more accurate.

I took the class today, but I went a different route. I took a Utah class, non resident. The class was a lot shorter than the TX and cheaper. The states recognize each other. We'll see. Instructor was cool, in and out in 3 hours.

Do they even send an email or some sort of confirmation that they received my packet? Or is that what the pin is?

Oh well, no hurry.... Well, unless someone tries to F* w/ me today. Haha.

Sweet. I checked my mailbox today and there it was. It came in an envelope with nothing but the CHL and cardstock. No letter or anything explaining anything. It took a little bit over a month. I never even got my pin....

Now, to go gun shopping......

I don't know yet. I'm going to go to a few places and see what feels right and is compact enough for comfortable carry. Suggestions?

I'm still waiting to make my carry purchase, but I'm personally looking at a Sig P229 SAS with a melt treatment, or I may go with another Kimber, maybe an SIS.
The RO at Quail Creek let me shoot his Kimber Pro Carry and it was a nice gun. Shot great.

These two are expensive guns though, so you'll want to know what your budget is before looking.
