Hammer tension

Those of you with external hammered guns, do you keep them cocked for extended periods of time? Is that bad to keep them that way for days/weeks on end?

I've kept my 1911 in battery (with safety on) for a few days, but if the gun is going to be out of my direct control for more than that then it gets unloaded and safed. Safety will outrule wear an tear everytime for me.

Keeping a spring under compression will not cause it to weaken unless it is a really cheap ass spring.

People have carried 1911s "cocked and locked" for years, but when in storage, I keep mine with the slide closed and hammer dropped.

You're not going to wear out a hammer spring. I do however changed my duty magazine springs every 6 years or so.

I'm do to replace them any time now... The last time I replaced them was in August of 2004.
