Thumbs up Went to the Gun Range today for the First Time....

I had only shot a shotgun twice, a handgun once before in my life. I didn't really like it at first, just loud, and I didn't feel comfortable with it. But, my buddy took me down to the Gun Range and after about my second magazine, I was feeling good.

This is going to be one expensive addiction.... Any suggestions for a hand gun and where to buy it?

EDIT: Oh, and I didn't know you had to put bullets into the magazine manually, I thought there was a machine or something. Damn you, Hollywood! And the one handed pistol shot.... yeahhhhhhhh, not gonna happen.

EDIT 2: Ninja Edit

01 GT Vert.... FINALLY!!!! "They Ain't 20's but I keep 'em clean"

Go buy a .22 LR Handgun. Its cheap to shoot and the guns are generally around 200 dollars. You can get a Smith & Wesson 22A for around 200 bucks. Its a good little target plinker.

When you get used to handling firearms, you can step up and buy a 2nd handgun.

I started with a 9mm, and worked up. Now I have several calibers. You are right it is an expensive hobby and turns quick into an addiction. lol. Have fun and be careful.

I just went through the safe and made a record of each gun/serial number/value.

I'm sitting at 22 firearms and almost $17k in value.

Of course, someone out there (cough *David* cough) has that beat with just one gun.

I bought my Dad a single Para Ord. 1911 back in March and since then he went from owning that 1 pistol to 35. Most are Sig, 2 POFs, a REPR LWRC and a bunch others.

There has to be meetings that people can go to.

....and Sarait, proper protocol is to post up before you go to the range. You never know someone may want to meet you and let you bust some caps from their toys.

Id start with a 9mm... ammo is realatively cheap compared to .40 and .45.. You can get a box of 9mm for $10, .40 for $13 and .45 for $15.

If you are just doing target practice, no need to spend the extra 50% on .45 ammo. Now if this will later be a carry gun, Id recommend starting at a .40. The good thing, guns dont really lose much value. I actually got a good deal on my first XD40 and sold it for $75 profit after putting 500-600 rounds down the barrel. There are a ton of threads on what gun to get first...let me summarize it:

Go to a place like Academy and put your hands on a bunch...see what feels comfortable. Then research it. Good brands Id recommend: Springfield, Beretta, H&K. Im not a fan of the Glocks, but many people are. I personally will carry my Springfield XD45 till I die.

How much for the 1911? Also, if you have outstanding warrants, can you still purchase a gun?

It depends are they from speeding tickets or are they from actual crimes? If crime then not unless you have been formally charged I think. I am not sure.

I just bought my first hand gun 3 weeks ago. .40cal S&W Sigma . it was $300 plus $50 mail-in rebate at Academy. I have no problem with it at all putting about 200 rounds through it. fits my(bigger) hands better than the Glock 19 I shot 4 days before buying the sig. great entry level hand gun in my opinion.

You wouldn't have an Enfield M1917 in that library you wouldn't mind parting with?

Also consider a S&W revolver, preferably .357 magnum. You can shoot .38 caliber (cheap) through it for routine target practice as well as the much more robust magnum ammunition.
