want sword.

can i buy a functional katana (meaning i can attack zombie with confidence) for about $200? anymore than that and i think its a waste of money.

i read a site (sword-buyers-guide.com) that tells me what to look for. full tang of course, 1095 high carbon steel forged steel, heat treated. says there are deals for like $150-300 that are a pretty good sword. even have a list of vendors that are reliable with reviews.

thoughts?

Take your pick. The SBG site has some good reviews and their own brand sounds well made and usable. I bought a Katana made by Ryumon a few years ago and it has been all I need or wanted. They are really sharp and handle like an extension of your arm. When I first started practicing I almost cut into my leg practicing some running slicing moves. Got a wooden katana practice sword after that!

Fortunately for my pride no one was recording. I did have someone tossing up round squash as I maneuvered through a pistol course I had set up to practice dynamic scenarios. Just scared the shit out me but the person tossing didn’t see a thing and there was no blood or yelling “I cut my leg off”. Probably the whole thing was funny as I went around slicing squash in the air with way too much force. I know better now.

Not knocking it, but other then being 10 years old watching Ninja 1-3 I have never wanted a sword.
Are they just to collect? Are there secret DFWS Ninja's?

I have a live blade katana from Bugei that i purchased after recieving my first dan in Iai. (I forever have the scar on my left palm from where I sliced myself practicing a ippon me mae. Never felt it, but the amount of blood said something was wrong). I think it was just under 2k in 2006, but a quick check shows prices have gone up a bit.

If you can't practice cutting techniques without it shattering or snapping the blade, it's not worth it.

A cheap sword is exactly that - a cheap sword. Buy yourself a machete instead.

Paul Chen makes an excellent practical battle ready katana for like $250. I bought one for my brother and bought a different brand for myself some forge out of japan and his is much better than mine.

Why does everyone like katana swords so much? Maybe its the European history major in me, but longswords and bastard swords are fucking beautiful.

i think it's cause everyone regarded the samurai as the best swordsman. whether that's true or not i have no idea.

i do like the very plain long sword as well.
i think the curve of the katana feels a bit better for balance.

I learned for the art, not because it was "real world" functional. It's an amazingly beautiful thing to learn. Once work calms down and I have some free time I'll be starting up into Kendo. I'm really looking forward to getting started.

look at the musashi swords on trueswords.com The Musashi elite can be had for $199. They are both functional(razor sharp) 1045 and 1060 steel and very beautiful to look at. The Bamboo warrior sword on page 2 is also a great deal. IMO it is the best sword for the money.

They are, but have you ever hefted a real broadsword or two handed sword? Those things are fucking heavy.

There is more finesse in a Katana. They are more manueverable than the heavy swords that utilize the hacking movement.

X2. I thought that I was the only one. My grand dad gave me a real Katana that he got during the war when I was 10. I took it and rode my bike to a local bowling alley that had marshal arts classes. Needless to say the instructor was stunned. I took Kendo with him for 2 years using my paper route money. Sadly my crack head step brother pawned my Katana some where in Ft Worth in 99' and it hasn't been seen since.

Cold Steel has some quality swords but I have never owned one of the ones that they make so I don't speak from first hand experience. I do know that all of their other products are great. My girl friend uses their Sjambok on her hard core clients and I love their battle mace.

They had one handed swords in Europe too, but the way that the Europeans fought was vastly different than the way they got it done in medieval Japan.

If I were to buy a sword I would get the suit of armor to display along with it

Japanese sword guy as well. However I prefer the shorter wakizashi. It is easier to parry and thrust with (especially single-handed). For me it is a faster sword. For dueling, the longer katana has it's advantages. But being able to do the short chops and twists are a plus when it gets down and dirty.

Kinda like the one handed swords in "Gladiator". I'd bet the short sword still outweighed a katana.

I had the wakizashi, but traded it for the Katana.

I agree but if you watch the TV show "Lock and Load" with R Lee Ermy they did a comparison and the katana came out on top in every test.....

For zombies, I'd rather have a 6lb splitting maul, unless they're the newer zombies that can somehow run faster than the living. Then I want an M134, or a well stocked tower and some 17hmr's.

Give me a dollar.

You mean a gladius? Thats what the roman army used.

They had two pila (javelins). One for long range engagement to be thrown at range. The other to be thrown within very short range that would impale itself in a shield, which would then drag it down for the roman to use the gladius to stab them in the chest.

I bought this Cold Steel Cutlass for some pirate work up in Colorado.

http://www.coldsteel.com/1917cutlass2.html

Really well made but it in no way moves like my Katana. Looks good on the side of my Superglide.

I wouldn't want a splitting maul, too heavy. I would rather have an old school double bit axe..
