Next years pistol purchase...

I'm already considering my gun purchase for next year.

Here's my question: Do any of you board members have a pistol you dedicate to truck/car duty?

I don't have a wheel gun, yet. My deal is, I don't like having a gun without a purpose, such as my XD Compact .45 for carry, my 5" XD .45 for home duty, etc.

I want to add a revolver to the family, and I wouldn't mind having a pistol for the truck. I've tried it once, and drawing from sitting in the drivers seat with the seatbelt on can be a bitch.

I found a Ruger GP100 .357 for between 5 and 6 hundred dollars. I dig it, because it's not a snubby. I'm not looking for a BUG, I don't plan on carrying it.

The other option is picking up a moderately priced 1911, just to have.

Its very hard to compare the 2 choices you put forth. A 1911 and a Gp100 are very different, so to pick which one is "better" becomes a matter of opinion.

I like 1911s and I like revolvers. I guess just buy both

None of my guns have a specific purpose and there is no such thing as having too many.

Does the GP100 have a 4 or 6" barrel?

You should be able to get a GP100 under $500.

You know I've never understood the purpose of a "truck/car" gun. If I'm going anywhere I'm carrying concealed. Hell I carry while I'm at the house LOL! If I'm running to my "truck" I'm going for something bigger than a handgun. As far as having difficulty while drawing from a seated position, try taking it out of the holster and placing it somewhere more convenient.

I have a gp100 4 inch barrel. I really like that gun, and feel it will hold its value well.
I've carried it around 2 gun shows, and get stopped about every 4th booth with someone asking to buy it. I do realize that this happens to most people at a gun show, people are in the buying/selling business, but ive never had it happen as much as it does with my Ruger. It may also be the fact i look very young, and people feel like i may not know what its worth.

Truth be told, that's probably what will end up happening.

Hell, I'm just trying to rationalize buying it. Need to come to terms with the addiction, lol. Fuck it, I don't need a reason.

If you are going to load a gun and put it somewhere for 5+ years, then you should consider NOTHING but a wheelgun.

Hell, when I was a rookie I saw old heads with guns that had bullets that turned a blue/green.

I'd shoot it, often enough to be comfortable with it.

That's another thing...I don't guess I'm to a point yet where I'll buy a gun just to have it. I shoot everything I have. Nothing like 2-3 times a week, but at least once a month, I'll make a range trip. 50 rounds minimum through my hand guns; and once or twice a month I'll go put a round or two through my .308. The shottie is a different story, that thing might get shot two weekends a year.

Just checked the price on the GP....519 plus tax. Comes to $561.82.

I'll look for a better deal.

It would be hard to beat a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum. You might find one cheaper, but those guns are real work horses.

I've got a GP100 in the 6" flavor. I also have a S&W Model 64 4" barrel .357 Mag.

If I was given permission, I would toss my electric gun and carry that Model 65. The .357 Magnum has the highest one shot stop percentage of any round ever carried by police.

If you want a good "stash away just in case gun" gun check these out http://www.jgsales.com/index.php/cPath/16_211_431 S&W model 64 police trade-ins. They probably have a few miles on them, but still a rock solid gun for cheap.

I'm guessing you mean your taser. So, is that what is considered your "department issued backup"?

You can't go wrong with either the GP100 or a 1911. A good cheap 1911 is the one made by Taurus. I bought 2 new ones about 2 years ago and shoot them nearly every weekend when the weather permits.

If you keep yours eyes open you can find a stainless GP100 with a 4" barrel for a little over $400.

I cant believe they are going for mid $500.
I paid $375 at the 'cheaper than dirt' stand on Dec-27-2007. It was the cheapest one at the gun show that day.

No, "electric guns" was what old heads referred to semi-autos as. I don't know where the moniker came from, but that's the old school term.

This was more than 10 years before the Taser came out.

You sure .41 Mag was designed as a police round and several departments adopted it.

Let me clarify. In the City of Fort Worth, the most effective handgun round is the .357 Magnum.

An L frame was S&W's answer to the belief that the K frame was not strong enough to eat a steady diet of magnum rounds. They are both medium frames, with the L frame being a tad bit more robust (and slightly heavier, I believe).

I would love to have a 686 in .357 Magnum and 6" barrel.

I would love to have a 686 in .357 Magnum and 6" barrel.
I have an itching for one in 4" REEEAL bad.

They are great guns. You can get a 4" barrel Ruger for about 2/3 the price. I have a Ruger GP100 in the 6" barrel. I love it.

Hell, when I was a rookie I saw old heads with guns that had bullets that turned a blue/green.
i've got some like that. i've probably fired my grampas S&W model 15 more than he did, he only fired it when qualifying for the most part. he had other toys to keep him busy.

They don't make Pythons anymore and short of a custom you won't find a better trigger, oh and its a Colt.
