Dumbest question to ever hit THE ARMORY

ok so, we were out far far away in the middle of no where and had half a box of ammo. so we decided to waste it. We were shooting a .40 S&W, a pistol my cousin said the guy from academy said it was a good pistol for home-defense. Anyway, that bitch was LOUD and it hurt my ears not only that, it was very inaccurate.

My question is, is there a handgun that wont bust your eardrums every time its fired and is not a 22?

First, no, not really...

Second, a gun is only as accurate as the person firing it.

Were you shooting without hearing protection?

I don't have any personal experience with suppressors, but I imagine they would quiet a pistol down to a bearable level. Not a cheap option, but probably your best one.

Its not a dumb question - Guns are loud.

Don't believe Hollywood where they show a guy rapid firing and then being able to hear a twig snap. Your ears will ring and depending on what you shoot it may be several hours before the "cotton" sensation leaves your ears.

Firing a shotgun indoors will suck, and you may be talking REALLY LOUD FOR SEVERAL HOURS, but it'll fade.

Supressors will help alot on the pistol, but the crack of the bullet will still be plently loud unless you are using subsonic rounds. If you think you are going to get a "pfft pfft pfft" sound then you are mistaken. Here's a vid of a 9mm raw and then supressed:

Ear plugs?

I mean i always thought it was dumb to shoot without them...
I remember i was on a aerial gunnery range shooting miniguns. It was all good when i had my helmet on and then i made the mistake of trying to adjust my helmet while the gunner fired..... I couldn't hear for several hours... It was only 7.62 rounds, but maybe the fact it was shooting at 4k rounds a minute did the damage.... My ears literally hurts for hours... It sucked...

after that i always wore earplugs and the helmet...

yep subsonic rounds and suppressor for the win. Suppresors arent illegal, just you have jump through some hoops to get them. Alot of the crack you hear is the bullet breaking the sound barrier. Use subsonic rounds and you wont get that, especially with a supressor.

I shoot with earplugs and muffs over those. Remember, if you don't use ear protection, you get hearing AIDS.

ear plugs and or muffs, if you were to shoot in self defense you would never notice the sound. I would never think of firing my deer rifle(308) w/o protection sighting it in, but when I shoot deer with it I don't really even hear the gun go off. Adrenaline I guess?

I had a teacher tell me they used to take a rubber baby bottle nipple and stretch it on the end of the barrel then slit it with a razor to make a silencer on a 22. Never tried it myself

Well when we're out hunting we don't wear ear protection usually, or at most in one ear. I accidentally fired my G3 automatic without any protection in (because I completely forgot I had my ear plugs out) that was the loudest thing I've ever heard, 20 rounds of .308 with no ear protection. The only caliber (besides magnums) that is really too loud to shoot without ear protection is a .45, 9mm, .22, .25, .32, all of those are not too bad.

Just remember, hearing damage is cumulative. You will not notice the hearing loss until after its already significantly been affected. Once gone, it's gone - it doesn't come back.

I always wear hearing protection when at teh range or hunting. (hunting I'll have the foam buds around my neck and pop em in when the critter shows up)

38 Spl target loads are pretty quiet. They are about 700fps. Can shoot them from 357 Mag.

9mm with 147gr Subsonic loads isn't bad either.

My 1911 in 45 ACP with target loads is not bad.

I would think a revolver wouldn't be very useful suppressed since all the pressure would escape out of the cylinder gap. But I've never seen or heard a suppressed revolver, it would be interesting.

To see what would happen, I once loaded my 22 revolver up with some CB shorts. I shot 3 rounds normally, and then cut a small hole in a pillow and put the barrel inside. The next 3 shots were quieter, but marginally so. Ill bet the sound reduction on a silenced big caliber revolver would be minimal due to the gap.

cb shorts are the shit, I use to fire them with a suppressor in my back yard at night. I destroyed every little car I owned.

What kind of gun did you use? I have been thinking about getting a bolt action 22 and threading the barrel for this very purpose.

The Nagant 1895 cylinder moves forward to seal the gap when the hammer is cocked.

that's exactly what I used - a cheap single shot bolt action marlin and I threaded the barrel.
