Leaving For IL tonight.. Suggestions?

My g/f and I are leaving to go to IL to visit some of her friends and family. After checking online we don't have any reciprocity with IL. Any advice on carrying? This is my first time traveling to a state that I can't carry concealed. We are driving so I planned on taking a firearm with me... I would like to at least take it with me and once we arrive at the destination I can leave it at the house we are staying in. My concern is carrying it while driving and the slim chance we were to get stopped for something. We are driving from TX through AR and MO to arrive in IL.

My advice, don't carry. No need to chance it unless you think you are going into a situation that specifically warrants it.

I don't know the laws well enough, I would probably just leave the gun at (your) home.

I should have done this first, but I just got off the phone with the sheriff's department for the city I will be staying in. I spoke to the current "on duty watch officer" and he told me following:
1. Before I cross into IL that the gun must be disassembled, has to be inoperable
2. All ammunition must be stored away from the firearm. It doesn't have to be in a separate case or bag, but should be unloaded from the mag.
3. IL does not have a carry law so it must stay at the residence I'm staying at until I'm ready to leave.

He was very polite about it and thanked me for calling ahead for clarification. Easy enough!

Wow...way to have people defend themselves!

God Bless Texas!

And good idea calling the sheriff.

That sucks. At least he was nice about it though.

Good luck, be careful, and don't get pulled over.

run a thin zip tie through the mag well and out the slide, renders it inoperable per guidelines and it's still assembled just in case you need to save your life.

I wouldn't go there personally no matter who of my family is there. But if I were you I would NOT bring a thing. That place is just waiting to pick people like you up to " make the state a safer place". That is how a friend of mine put it. Never visited him up there. Then he moved back to texas.

I have a conversation every year at my family reunion, where I try to convince my family to leave Oklahoma, and move to Texas. I'm convinced they'd notice a difference, but they always shoot the idea down. You should try this line of reasoning with your family.
