CHL class and backlog?

I've been putting this off and need to get it done. Looking for a class in Sherman/Mckinney/Greenville area. Anyone know one?

Is there still a huge backlog in getting the license?

What all do I need to have prior to the test?

Just bring a gun to the class to take the shooting test ... everything else is easy as long as you meet the state requirements. As far as a class held around there you might want to check out the bullet trap or DFW gun range. I dont know how far those are from you though. Also, because of the large amout of people getting there CHL right now it may be hard to find an instructor that has a place in class for you. Best thing to do would be to go to this forum ( http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCH...wforum.php?f=6 ) and try to find a class with an opening near you (or that you would be willing to drive to)

Also, I recommend taking the class at Crossfire Training so you can get both a Texas CHL and a Utah CFP. The Utah CFP gives you 3 more states you can carry in.

Bullet Trap in Plano is what I'd recommend.

Class on a Saturday, then the following week qualify, fingerprint...etc...etc. Great instructor, helps keep it from being too boring.

This will put you through the preliminary background check and they will send you the packet to fill out.
Most classes have this already for you, but this way you also have your PIN, and are 1 step ahead of everyone else...
I am not sure if it speeds it up at all, but takes some of the hassle out of the after class waiting.

Great advice!

I wish I had done that before I took the class. I know that waiting for the packet added a bit to my wait for plastic.

Red River in Sherman has CHL classes.

http://redriverfirearmsllc.com/

Its not the class that's hard to get, its waiting for the state to process afterwards. They have a HUGE influx of applications right now.

Oh, and bring a semi-auto for the shooting portion.

What GhostTx said, Red River Firearms in Sherman Texas. It's where I took mine...and it's all done in one day. Class, fingerprinting/affidavits/photos....shooting qualification.....everything. Only thing left to do after the class is send off the application.

It was a great experience....the instructor, Mr. Blankenship, is an interesting dude.

Their number is 903-893-8449.

Also, the class will run 120 bucks. I know some other places do it cheaper, but for what it's worth, I highly recommend this place....good facility, good people. Immensely helpful and proffessional.

I'm ready to do the same thing Sean. Too bad I'm a city away or I'd meet you out there and attend with you.

Wasn't there someone on here that was offering to train several people if we could all get the same date aligned? Or was that something else (not CHL)?

After you take the class, you have 1 year to send in your application (and $140). So, you don't have to front $260 all at once, just the class...then wait until you have the application money later.

The link I posted at the top of the thread has a deal $150 for both Utah and Texas CHLs in one day. I don't know what there load looks like on classes but I am sure there is room in there somewhere. I took mine at http://chltx.com/ It was $99 bucks for the class and it was entertaining. He seems to be full more often than other though.

As far as where the class is best, I have heard the most positive things about Crossfire training. Downside to you is it is in Roanoke. Up side is the shooting portion is done at a private range.

The Bullet Trap class is 120, thats..

All the paperwork
Fingerprints
class
qual
2 range passes
1 rental

I'm sure others do the same, the reason I push this class is the instructor is good and NOT boring. I did not fall asleep once and probably only yawned like 15 times.

I called the place that P_B listed. They have a class in late December at Cabela's. If David waffles on me, I'll hit the Sherman class.

In bro!
Just tell me when/where and I'm there.

I would like to get some range time with my new Kimber first (still haven't had time to shoot it) but whenever is good for me.

I also don't mind cruising to Sherman either, if that's a better choice.
Just let me know.

I don't care. The Cabela's Dec 29th course is nice because its later (10am) but I'm waiting to get a call back - I'll try them tomorrow again if I don't hear from them.

If you can't find a place to practice, let me know.

What are the distances you have to qualify at?

3, 7 a 15 yds. You can get everything you need on the 3 and 7...miss all the 15s and be fine. It's VERY easy, but you'll see folks struggling/failing anyway.

yep, 20 shots a 3 yards (9 ft)

20 shots at 7 yards (21 ft)

and 10 shots at 15 yards (45 ft)

50 shots total...and you need 70% inside either the 10 ring or the 8 ring.
So 35 shots in the zone is a pass.

And if you're looking for a place to practice, GhostTX and I were talking about hitting up the Sherman range sometime soon. Could turn it into a mini shooting GTG.

I'm money then. I practice at 25 yds and stick everything in the 'you're not leaving my house' zone.

Is the Sherman deal one day long (including range?)

If you can't find a place to practice, let me know.

What are the distances you have to qualify at?

The class in Sherman is a one day deal. The class, fingerprinting, photographs, affidavits, and shooting qualifications all in one day.

Ideally, assuming you pass everything, the only thing you'll need to do after the class is send off your application.

Remember, some people are alive simply because it is illegal to kill them.

Well, I finally got some range time (Quail Creek) with my .45, and... DAMN I suck! Jesus Christ I had no idea how bad I was with a hand gun.
I tried lowering my aim but I guess not enough. Now, the 8mm on the long range was dead on, but I spent a box of .45's just filling the dirt. How embarrising. Mary was just giggling at me.

I need to find a good deal on some bulk ammo and get some more time with this gun before we hit the CHL class. Stopped by Acadamy to pick up some cleaning supplies and they said that they have a box of Remington .45 @ $99.00 for 250 rds. They get trucks on Monday's so I'll call and see if they've got them in and make another trip to the range.

Best bet is to start calling Wal-Marts and ask the sporting goods department if they have any .45 in stock. You also might want to practice for your CHL at an indoor range and not at somewhere like Quail Creek. QC will not allow you to do the double taps that you will be tested on. They also dont have the capability to change target distances wich is also part of the test. There are two ranges not too far from QC that will allow you to practice for the test. The first is The Shooters Club on 28th st., the second place is Winchester Gallery off 820 and Lancaster.

Start closer.

Try not to focus as much on the sights and look at the target, breath, be the bullet...be the bullet.

Quail Creek has fixed target stands. Not much good for doing anything other than bullseye shooting. He would have to go to an indoor range to be able to hone his skills.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll do that (indoor range..). I've heard about the Winchester place but didn't know about the one on 28th. I work not too far from there (28th) and may give that one a try as soon as I find some cheap ammo.

Only places I can think of are Wally World, Academy, and maybe Cabellas. I havent had much luck elsewhere. I know Cheaper Than Dirt stocks it normally but it is priced kinda stupid.

Did the women in your class shoot as bad as a cross eyed cyclops?

Too bad you can't take it with a rifle. Hell, they'd be calling me Lucas McCain then!

Yeah, that's (CTD) where I got the "box-o gold" ammo I was shooting.

Come to think of it I may have seen some .45 at the sports authority on 377 next to the water tower. ( 7612 Denton Hwy )

Im tellin ya, its EASY. The target is first at 9 feet. Then you stretch out your arms and the damn paper is basically in your face. You get 20 shots at 9 feet. Then 20 shots at 15 feet. If you get all of them on the target during the first 2 parts, I dont think you even need to hit the paper to pass.

Just take the class with CHLTX guy David. Guaranteed to pass. His house where he teaches the class is about 3 miles from Winchester gallery and you shoot at Winchester.

If you cant find ammo, I have 2-3 boxes of .45 left you can borrow till you find some.

Thanks Tim.

I just called Acadamy and they didn't get the bulk ammo in so I'll check the Sports Auth that P/B mentioned, since I drive right by there on my way home.

I think I was shooting the 25 yard range at Quail Creek and that may have contributed to my bad accuracy, especially for my first outing with this gun. 9 & 15 feet sounds like a gimme after that. lol

David, Academy in Sherman had 2 bulk boxes (250 shots) for $98. Call them. I can pick them up if you need me to.

Thanks Sean.

I called my local store and asked if they'll ship to/from another store. They are checking and will call me back later.

I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
