1911 question

I told my dad that for Father's Day, I'd buy him a pistol for Christmas.

He's been wanting to get into handguns, but for whatever reason won't take the step of getting a first gun. So...I figured I'd help

Here's the question: I found a decent deal on a 1911 .45ACP made by Auto-Ordinance......anyone ever heard of them? Any feedback? Opinions?

TIA

Auto Ordinance is a reputable company. They've made 1911's for some time from what I remember (they also made the Thompson Submachine Gun) and I can't say I've ever heard of anything bad about them.

Now promising your dad that for Father's Day that you will buy him a gun for Christmas? Wouldn't that be a Christmas present at that point?

Thanks...you reinforced what I've heard.

And yes, it is a Christmas present. I took him out shooting for father's day, and he absolutely loved it.....the XD, the S&W, the AR, the .270, the Mossberg.

When he mentioned wanting to go shooting, he said he'd bring his stuff.

Turns out, his stuff consisted of his 7MM rifle.

I showed up with what he considered a small arsenal, lol. It was a great day though, and now he wants a handgun.

I like them for what they are, which is a token cliche' "hard working man's .45". Keepshooting.com had them for sale $499 plus shipping of $20, plus you add in transfer fees totaling $540 minimum. I was at Cheaper Than Dirt last week and seen them going for $529 plus tax.

Also the fact that its American Made as opposed to Springfield G.I.'s being made in Brazil.

auto ordnance is decent for the money its no better than the rock island or doublestar or you name it of the lower end 1911's personally I'd buy the rock island over the auto ordnance they seem a little tighter out of the one's I have played with.

That's pretty much what the guy at the counter told me. He's not looking to jump right into tournament level IDPA shooting.....he just wants something he and I can do together that we both enjoy....and something to keep with him in the truck when his work takes him to Houston and such.

I'll have to look into Rock Island.

I may end up getting him into a Colt. He's had one long ago, and says he liked it. But, then again, that was before I was born....he may just have no experience with anything else.

I'm thinking the best course of action is to get him to a gun shop with me....at the very least get a little hands on with a few different models.

If you're going to consider dropping the coin for a Colt, take a look at the Kimbers and other higher quality brands. You should be able to get a Kimber for cheaper than a Colt.

kimbers are nice and all but nothing says 1911 like a nice colt.

I wouldn't look into Rock Island when Auto Ordinance's are in the same price range or cheaper. The only reason Rock Island is being talked about is because they are readily more available locally. They also have a few tactical variations which would put you in the ball park of a Taurus 1911. Personally, I'd take the Taurus over the Tactical Rock Island.

Only colts that cost as much as a Kimber is the Gold Cups.My Colt cost about $700 where as my Kiber cost $1300.Even base model Kimbers are $900-$1000.
