30.06 shot a deer in the head

150 grain Remmington core-lokt bullet, no pictures. He had his head turned broadside, I hit him right behind the eye. There was no exit hole on the orther side. No kidding, it put a 3" open hole where the bullet hit and must have exploded on impact. I saw one horn go flying and never found it. It was a spike anyway so no loss there. I just thought it was amazing the damage and no exit hole.

You sure the 3" hole is not the exit hole? I have never in my life see and entry hole bigger than the bullet.

When the light bullet hit the bone it came all to pieces. There was no sign of any hole on the exit side. The missing horn was on the side the bullet hit. The other side of the head looked good, no damage

Did you mean to shoot the deer in the head? I usually shot them behind the ear if I was shooting to save the meat.

Maybe the bullet somehow bounced around inside the head and came back out the entry area and thats why there was such a big hole.
The don't make a big hole going in, just when they come out.

I have shot a doe in the side of the head and half the head was pretty much gone and no exit hole. And that was with a .243 130 grain blistic tip.

Watched my brother shoot a spike in the head with a 25-06 and it was the same result, half the head missing and the other side not really messed up. The bullet is fragmenting on impact with the bones in the skull.

Nossler Tips and Soft Point have a NASTY habit of exploding on impact at point blank ranges...

Let me guess, you were less than 30 yards away?

45 yards. It was no problem, the deer dropped and twitched a few times.
Perfectly intact organs makes for a clean dressout.

I figured it was at a pretty point blank range. Thats why the bullet exploded.. hehe..
