Going feral hog hunting....

Leaving in a couple hours to head down to the Rankin area (just outside of Lake Bardwell by Ennis). An old friend of the family has about 10k acres of farm land and the hogs are getting out of control.

He's tired of his crops getting rutted out, and has asked us to go on a mission. A buddy wants 2 or 3 to turn into sausage, and we can leave the rest.

I'm not even sure if we'll get any, since this is my first hunt out there and I haven't ridden the property to see, but we're bringing a 4 wheeler. Hopefully they will come out near sunset and we can pick a few off.

Taking 2 ARs and one .308 in case we need some long range shots.

Sounds like they need to be thinned out down there too. The gut that farms the land says they are wayyy outta control.

I wouldn't mind getting 50 lbs of sausage.....

That sounds like fun. Hopefully you have stands out there, otherwise it is tough to get into gun range of one.

The farmer says they come out of the tree line at sunset. We're just going to shoot from the truck and go fetch with the 4wheeler....

If that doesn't work, we'll bring out some feeders and do it the easy way...

Sounds like fun. Hunting pigs is one of my favorite critters to shoot.

If the land owner is cool with it, bring some spotlights for some late night hunting.

That's the plan.

I'm bringing the Remington 700 PSS with the Nightforce scope. It's got several deer kills, but only one hog. I'm hoping for some distance shots if possible. If not, I'm bringing my AR and hoping we can flush them with the 4 wheeler.... We'll see....

This was kinda a quick throw together thing. It's not like we're gonna put the hogs on the endangered list today.

I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of them out there....

We had this big beast coming to the feeder pretty consistantly a few weeks back but of course when we go to try to bust him he's a no show. I'm going to give it a shot next weekend if I can escape V-day

The powder straight out of the box or after it's been made into Jello?

Powder straight out of the box. Just pour a few boxes around on the ground, and they will come running.

I'm a little tickled that you asked that. lol

Well, we got there about 4:30 or so, and started to drive around the field perimeter because there is winter wheat planted.

We came around a point of trees and there were 6 hogs trapped in a pen. The guy I was with his eyes got about this big:

We decided to leave them alone and try to get some as they came out of the treeline at dusk. There were signs of a lot of hogs because of all the rutting in the field.

It soon became too dark to hunt, so we went back to the pen and cleaned the ones that were there. They weren't big, and probably averaged about 50-60 lbs after gutting and taking the feet and head off.

Oh, and I took the wife's Fuji Film camera, but it was missing the damn memory card...

90% of all my hog hunts are at night. Best time. You just need a red light and a huge set of balls. I usually bring the light.

We had 2 places to go. The one we went to and another that was gated. The farmer left it unlocked so I felt it my responsibilty to go lock it since we didn't hunt.

Going down the dirt road to the gate 5 of the fuckers ran right out in front of me.

I need to get a red light......

Feral hogs are the very reason I bought a model 57 Smith (.41 mag) years ago. You learn to make that first shot count, consequently, I was forced to become a better marksman... Handgunning FTW!

Leanest pork you can get. I usually quarter mine up and set them on ice for 3 days, each evening poring out the water and adding new ice. This will get rid of most of the blood that gives wild game a gamy taste. I definitely like it better than store bought.

Ok, this got me to thinking about buying a Night Vision scope. I've been looking, and anything Gen II or later can run at least $1k - 3k.

Are hogs afraid of light? I was just curious if they were, because I was thinking about spreading strawberry/fruit punch kool aid/jello around the place I saw the 5 hogs go across. It was pitch black, but I saw some lights like this at Wal-Mart for $4 each. I could put one on each side of the road to help illuminate the bait and sit back about 100 yards and pick them off.

Here's the link to some solar powered lights that are similar:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=10848174

I figured 2 lights for $8 would be a hell of a lot cheaper than a night vision scope unless it would scare the hogs off.

What do you guys think???

I have a buddy who is a high level tech for Raytheon optics, works in the military optic division, and he can get you fantastic deals on their consumer grade digital hunter stuff.

http://www.binocularsbestbuy.com/ELC...Scope-KIT.html

you can attach IR boom lights to your rifle, and light up the night like daytime, all of which isn't visible. And, your scope stores activity before/after a shot digitally.

Ghetto money... $500 or so. I was looking at something like this:

I was talking about this with a co worker and was just called a redneck! BTW, this is coming from a black female who was born and raised in the Cliff....

On the NVG/Infrared devices I have used, the downside is that the infrared light is visible to your target. It may not matter for the hogs, but a human will definitely notice the infrared glow on your device.
