Got myself an AR-15, but did I get a good deal?

Well I was browsing a local classifieds section and I came across this:

Original Description:

Brand new, never fired, mint condition. Buyer needs to break this in properly. EA lower, M1S 16" upper, 4 pos folding stock and I'll even throw in a brand new Bushmaster 30rd magazine. FTF cash only.

Was able to get it for $875 cash. Met him near his work and I bought it.

I am going to take it to the range soon, but first I need to get a couple more mags from CTD and about 250 - 500 rounds of .223/5.56.

What do you guys think? I have never heard of EA (Essential Arms) but it is in great condition. Compared to some of the other AR's out there going for $1100+, I could at the very least turn a nice profit on it if it's not a good brand. But I certainly would like to keep it.

So this is another weapon in my collection. I have a Saiga 7.62x39 AK conversion, a nice Winchester .22 and now I have my first AR.

I still need a glock and a nice tac shotgun.

I didn't see any markings on the barrel, but the top of the magazine says 5.56

Break it in properly? WTF does that mean? It's an AR, not a bench/sniper rifle. Just put 100 rounds through it, clean it, and rock......

I was going to ask about that. This is what he told me to do:

"Still hasn't had a round through it. Remember to break this in properly. People do it different ways but what I do is fill a 30rd magazine and after each fired round for the first 10 rounds, run a bore snake with a few drops of oil on the tail-end through it and then do it ever over round for the next 20 and you're all set"

Not necessary?

Probably overkill but sure isn't going to hurt anything...

That's pretty much how you treat a precision rifle (benchrest rifle or sniper). I broke my .308 in by firing 5 rounds, bore snake, 5 rounds, cleaning. I did that about 5 times.

I keep all my brass and every fired piece is considered (seasoned).

But that's totally unnecessary for an AR IMHO.

Thanks for the info, I might do it for the first 10 rounds just to be on the safe side.

Now, what do you think about the price? Decent?

Yes, that is a decent price, I just have no experience with an Essential Arms lower. I'm not sure who machines them.

I was able to buy a Stag M4 upper and lower in November (4 days post election) for just under $800.

You need some kind of rear sight. You can either go to Cheaper Than Dirt or MSG and get a cheap carry handle for about $50 or buy some kind of flip up rear sight like the A.R.M.S or the Midwest Industries piece.

Yep, was planning on visiting them this Saturday for their $40 handle. I do have optics that were on my AK, but they sit REALLY low on the AR, so iron sights for me on this one.

Thanks for the pricing feedback.

Fantastic, that is (12) .223 rounds that I do not have to waste on killing them.

look underneath the hand guards, it should be stamped on there somewhere...

you need to make sure it can shoot 5.56 or only use .223. Even though it is stamped by the magazine well that does not mean the upper receiver and barrel can safely shoot 5.56... They are not the same...

Its all good... lots of people think they are the same. I didnt want you to make the same mistake I almost made...

On my rifle, you have to look through the little holes in the hand guard to see the stamp but its there... it should tell you the caliber and the twist rate of the barrel...

Look through the holes? Don't the guards come off on the AR like they do on the M16?

Yeah, when I turned the rifle over, I saw the stamp through one of the holes... I didnt really need to take them off once I verified it was what I ordered...

I was expecting it to be marked closer to the front sight in the open. In this case, they placed in out of sight under the hand guards... no biggie...

Breaking in an AR-15.... I broke in a new M16A3 during my last year in the Navy. I've never heard anything about breaking them in.... We just took it to the range and shot it. My last time to requalify with a rifle was with a brand new M16A3 that had been test fired by the armory and that's it. That non broken in rifle put a whole bunch of rounds in a spot the size of a quarter from 50 yards. It even put a bullet through a bullet hole once or twice according to the rangemaster.

If it's chrome lined, absolutely don't worry about break in. Just clean it when you're done shooting.

Give me a dollar.
