got a new gun (gurus inside please)

my dad gave this to me today and he has had it as long as i have been alive..
its a mauser but other that that i know nothing he got it brand new when he was a kid and it was still packed in grease.. he shot a few hundred rounds through it when he was a kid but i know it hasnt been shot in over 30 years...
just curious on info/opinions etc.. im not gonna sell it but im also curious what it is worth..

It's an 1891 Mauser that's been sporterized.

They range anywhere from $150-$500 depending on conditions/modifications and who's buying it etc.

Thumbs up Good find

Most of these rifles were imported into the US by a company name Lowes (sp?) in the late 40's and 50's. They were fresh actions and barrels in a sporter stock. Most were in brand new to excellent condition when sold. Later imports in the 60's were not quite as good. I have owned several over the years, every one of them was a good shooter.

Check to see if there are proof marks on the barrel and if the barrel matches the action. Occasionally someone would re-barrel one of these. Not very often, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Good looking gun, but.....send it over to C.J. to be reworked and polished and you could have an heirloom that you pass on through the generations.
