I love watching these. I hadn't seen this clip, thought it was pretty awesome.

When I was stationed in Gitmo (Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) I used to LOVE to watch the ships do training exercises with those. They would have TA-4J trainers pull targets by cable and the CIWS would chew up the towed target. The CIWS (nicknamed R2D2 because it looked like the Star Wars character) would pick the largest part of debris and chew it up, then go to the next largest piece, and so on...

If the CIWS operator left it on, it would literally walk up the cable to the plane that towed it...... You get the picture....

I'm not sure what protocol now is, but back then they would not let anyone on deck near those things when in operation. I was in "Spook Central" once when one excercise was conducted, and it sounded like someone was beating on the bulkhead with a ball peen hammer. We had about 8" of steel around us and it was still loud!

If I remember right, it was a 20mm round and it used depleted uranium...

Yeah I bet, you can see them swinging around wildly, I'd be damn careful not to get blown into hamburger, haha.

You are correct, they are the ultimate gun.

I don't understand why they don't make a line of those around military installations and just turn them on. If someone shot a RPG at it, it would tear it to shreds. Missles would have the same fate.

I'd imagine it may be because the next day there would be a pile of spent brass and a wasteland of dead cattle, dogs, birds, tumbleweed, and trees.

Now THAT's the old school R2D2. I was told that the radar in those would track the target AND the rounds so it tracked the rounds to the target.

track the target AND the rounds thats nuts!!

I thought they, the R2D2s, were built to combat big anti ship missiles like the french built Exoset (sp?) missile. I know they are quasi allies but the theory is still the same.

During an exercise in the pacific in '96 (RIMPAC), a Japanese ship (Destroyer, IIRC) was supposed to engage with the CIWS a target being towed by an A-6E Intruder from our ship. Welllll, the Japanese crew locked up their target, when the plane was inbound toward them. The gun locked on the closest thing (the plane) and did it's job...shot the Intruder down. Luckily, the crew was able to eject and was rescued. When they came back aboard ship, the Captain congratulated them on surviving the first shootdown of a U.S. Navy warplane by a Japanese warship in 51 years.

It's very real.

A guy I work with was a captain the Marines... he was a nuclear safety officer assigned to artillery nukes.

0:40 for the shot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neom4tB99Bo

Quote:
The first artillery test was on May 25, 1953 at the Nevada Test Site. Fired as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole and codenamed Shot GRABLE, a 280 mm (11 inch) shell with a gun-type fission warhead was fired 10,000 m (6.2 miles) and detonated 160 m (525 ft) above the ground with an estimated yield of 15 kilotons. This was the only nuclear artillery shell ever actually fired in the US test program. The shell was 1384 mm (4.5 ft) long and weighed 365 kg (805 lb); it was fired from a special artillery piece, nicknamed "Atomic Annie", built by the Artillery Test Unit of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Around 3,200 personnel were present. The warhead was designated the W9 and 80 were produced from 1952-53 for the T-124 shell. It was retired in 1957.

It is real, one of them is sitting at Ft. Sill, Ok right now. I have no idea why it was developed but it is a real weapon. Got to see that bitch at Ft. Sill when I was in basic.

That video just looks fake to me. Of course it was done over 55 years ago. I'm surprised that anyone that worked on that project is still alive given that they would have to be at least 75 years old and the possible radiation exposure.

the tactical advantage of a nuclear warhead on an artillery shell has been eclipse by technology. Cruise missiles essentially make this pointless. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be pulling the wire on an artillery piece which is detonating a huge explosion under a nuclear bomb right next to me.

Even though A10s are not sexy looking planes, I'd bet it is like flying a go-kart with a huge chain gun on it..

They are very manueverable, and it doesn't hurt to have a 20mm cannon strapped to your ass!

I used to see them all the time doing training out of Cherry Point, NC while I was stationed at Camp LeJuene.
