Registering a gun.

A buddy of mine just bought a gun from a private party. How does he go about re-registering it into his name?

Why are you worried about it? If he wanted it swapped over he should have done the trans. through an FFL.

there is no "registration" of firearms in the state of Texas, unless said firearm is a machine gun, short barreled rifle, or destructive device

Move to New York? Why would you want to register it in your name? Most likely it wasn't in his name either. Just record the serial number and keep it incase you need to report it stolen someday.

State of Texas doesnt require registering guns on private sales. If he absolutely has to he should go to a local gun shop and see if they can push the paperwork through. Usually that is done at the time of sale though.

x7....

It's his. He doesn't need to do squat except record the serial number, as has been said above.

I'd also take a pic of the gun and serial number and email it to myself just incase I needed it for any reason in the future (insurance).
