CHL delays....

I sent my CHL in around the first of April, and got my certified reciept back on April 7th.

I just called DPS and was informed by a lady that they are extrememly backlogged and my application has been entered, but not completed. They are working on March's applications now, and should be starting on April's within the next couple of weeks.

She told me if I haven't heard anything in 2 months call back....

She said that they have added extra staff and are working on the huge amount of applications that have come in unexpectedly this year.

So, those of you that have gotten yours, you are lucky. Those of us that are waiting are in the black hole.

If you need the number to call, I got through right away:

I read somewhere that there has been a 40% increase in applications from this time last year.

Bear with them, there are only so many fine folks in that office and only so many Troopers that do the background checks in each county.

Just curious if you sent in your paperwork by certified mail. By law, they only have a certain amount of time to process or deny.

i sent mine priority mail. they got it in the system april 11th so they were still over time wise but i believe the amount of incoming applications quadrupled and they didnt have the people to handle it

I went to the same class as Dee's wife and father-in-law, but had to wait another 30 days for my departmental letter.

I should have just qualified and send my stuff in as Joe Citizen. I could have had it by now....

When I took my CHL class last month, the instructor was talking about the backlog and that it is due to a high attrition rate and restaffing issues and to look forward to an additional 2-3 month delay. I was chatting with a guy at the range the same day and he had just received his CHL, a full 5 weeks after submitting his application. So who knows, you might get lucky and have yours hit the fast track. I am hoping mine does too.

I take it you are an LEO...if so, what is the benefit for LEOs to get a CHL other than bypassing the background check?

Might be a benefit when carrying off duty and also if he travels any (especially out of state) where his agency may not cover him carrying a concealed hand gun.

My understanding is that TCLEOSE certification and department IDs allow you to carry anywhere in the State of Texas except secure areas of an airport. Also, there was a bill pushed through the Federal (HB 218) level that allows for LEOs to carry in other states.

I don't know of any LEOs that have carried in other states under HB 218, but do know many that carry in TX with only TCLEOSE, badge and proper IDs.

With that, the only advantage I see is skipping the background check.

Will like I said, traveling out of state would benefit him if he has a CHL and going to a state that reciprocates.

It's cheaper to get, and I can buy guns without having to be called in.

Which makes NO FKING SENSE WHATSOEVER.

I can walk in wearing a uniform with a fully loaded gun in plain view and have to be run through the background check even though I held a Top Secret (Codeword) clearance in the Marines, and have been a peace officer for 17 years.

And, I wanted to go through the class so I knew what my wife would be going through when she decided to get her CHL.

Without verifiying this with text, I believe you are right. I've carried concealed in about 20 states including Illinois. Both times when I took my son to hockey tourneys there I checked it in my baggage and then carried it once out of the airport.

I flew into Midway both times and rented a car leaving the airport north on Cicero. That's not a good area...

I submitted my application in late May and just received my CHL today (July 3rd). This was for a third renewal and not a first-time application.
