Ammo prices on the rise??

A friend of mine says at the gun shows .223 rounds are almost 400$ for 1000 now. Is that true? I thought they were around 125-140$.
I'm not huge into guns or anything but would like to stock up a bit before it's like diesel.
Any advice on where to buy?

You are way behind the curve on ammo prices.

I've seen brass cased .223 for $450/1,000. The "cheap" stuff these days is Russian steel cased ammo (non reloadable unless you buy a de-mil accessory) is running $200-219 per 1k.

Here's a link to some ammo places:

Our prices go up when the US military buys everything they can get their hands on.

I'd like to think that the prices will come down when our troops come home, but I don't think the politicians will allow it.

New ammo might not come down but there will be plenty of surplus out there.

i have always wondered who they are trying to please with this. Do they just purposely ignore the gun crowd

here are some dollars on reloading:

Lee single stage kit: $90
Lee Progressive kit: $135
Lee .223 dies: $25

Brass: free from range pickup, $70/1000 once-fired.
Primers: $28/1000cnt(Federal Match), wolf, Magtech, or CCI are cheaper.
Powder: $20/1lb(about 280 .223 rounds worth), typically 16-22$/lb
Bullets: $48/500cnt Hornady 224 caliber 55gr bullets

You can get 5000, or 10k primers at a lower rate.
Typically, you can get powder in 1lb, 4lb, 8lb cannisters.

On a single stage, you can load up an afternoon of shooting in an afternoon.
On a progressive, you can do the same in about an hour. The more expensive Dillons advertise 1000rounds/hr.

Aren't you special.
I said I didn't know much about ammo. That's why I asked.
Then you posted your worthless comment "welcome to last year" while rolling your eyes.

In all fairness it would be like someone asking when gas prices went up.

It all started going up about two years ago.
Even the cheap Remington UMC .223 that was $3.25 is now up to 8.57.
Wolf 7.62x39 was $1.50 is now around 6.
