Looking to purchase first handgun

With all the craziness going on in the world i've decided i'd like to purchase a handgun for protection. I am thinking after the NewYear I will be ready to buy.

Being a first time buyer I have a couple questions.

With so many different types of guns where would be a good place to get a feel for something I am comfortable with? A gun show? Or can I goto say Bass Pro and they let me hold them?

Once I get the item i'd like to get my CHL. Do they teach you where your limitations are to carry and all that jazz?

If anyone has any advice for a first timer post up!

I dont know where you could go to try out guns.

As for the CHL question, yes they should explain to you in the class where and where not you are permitted to carry.

Maybe I worded that wrong, your reply sounds like I'd like to shoot different guns. Mainly just looking to hold them and see what is comfortable in my hand..

Also thanks for the reply!

Go to a gun range that has rentals. Elk Castle in west Fort Worth charges you one rental fee and you can shoot as many rental guns as they have. Some ranges charge you per gun. That's why I like Elk Castle.

Go with someone who knows guns so someone can teach you proper technique and answer your questions.

The CHL class will cover where and when you can and can't carry.

I don't think I've met you before but as long as you're not some crazy whacked out dude, sure. Saturdays would work. Or anything between Christmas and New Years Day.

id say start with a 9mm if you've never really shot before a chl is completely useless if you can't hit your target. The reason for 9mm is they are cheap. Shoot a few thousand rounds through the 9mm then get your CHL. If after you shoot for a while you want to up to a 40 or 45 it almost triples in price to shoot so gain your skill with the 9mm.

The advice to purchase a 9mm is sound. Buying a trombone doesn't make you a musician. Practice gets you to Carnagie Hall, and short of handloading or shooting a .22 cal, 9mm is the least expensive way with a handgun.

btw, 'practice' shouldn't mean standing at a range bench and shooting at a target.

are a couple of places to investigate if you're serious about self defense with a firearm.

I'm down for an Elk Castle GTG. Haven't taken the 1911 out in awhile. Definetly start with the 9mm. That should be the least you have as far as what you carry on yourself. Not to sound like another Glock groupie, but try them out, they're popular for a reason. If you can, try to make it to a gun show as far as purchasing since they have such a large variety there.

There may be ice on the road on Saturday

I'm not against a 9mm at all, that seems to be a reasonable way to get my feet wet.

GTG would be badass. Ill bring out my glock 19 (9mm) and let you shoot it all day so long as you buy the ammo man.

Since you will be carrying it pending a CHL, id just go to a range that lets you rent guns(or by the grace of some people on here letting you borrow one) give several a shot, see which one feels best in your hand and what you are the most accurate with, its all about feel.

I love the Springfield XDs, to me they feel "right". Ive shot a glock before, and had to shoot one for my CHL class, and as similar as they are to the XD, they felt more like a brick to me, just personal preference...

Theres lots of guns to try, and honestly, once you get one, youll soon after be buying a few more

I think a GTG would definitely be cool... it's always fun meeting stangers cause they are such assholes on the board and nice as can be IRL. It would be nice to do something this Saturday, but weather is not looking so well.

I know it'll be addicting, but for the most part I believe you can make your money back on a weapon vs say car parts. As stated above Elk Castle in Ft Worth has many different guns to rent/shoot there. Just a matter of getting there

Ive realized all that money im dumping into my cars, while fun, isnt getting me anywhere

like my dad that bought a marlin 336 30-30 for 60 dollars that now fetch 350 new. Guns are good investments. I bought a mini 14 for 468 and they jumped almost 100 in the past two years.

DFW gun has classes and several guns to rent.

They are on Mockingbird and 35.

Their website lists their guns for rental.

If you guys decide to go then post up, especially during the holiday break. If I am in town I'll try and make it and I'll bring my guns. You can try them out as well. If I would have read this thread earlier I would have told you to go to Winchester Shooting Gallery last night. I was there for a while with my 1911's.
