What are the 'conditions'?

Haven't been able to find it with google, so I figured I'd ask you guys. In terms of describing a guns state of readiness I've heard terms like 'Condition 1' or some such in the past, maybe from military training?

Where do you find these descriptions (for lack of a better term)?

Being Infantry, I've never heard of this. It's either safe or it's not.

Conditions of Readiness:

Condition 4: Empty chamber, uncocked, no mag. in the weapon

Condition 3: Mag in the weapon, but no round in the chamber and uncocked

Condition 2: Chambered but uncocked

Condition 1: "Cocked and Locked" - Chambered and cocked but safety on

Condition 0: Chambered, cocked, safety off. Shooting mode.

So a double action semi-auto carried with a round in the chamber and the safety off - would that be Condition 1 1/2 or 1/2?

The shooter is the safety on any firearm. Don't be fooled by some mechanical device.
